Hey folks, Harry here... The Hollywood Reporter was at CineEurope, where Warners had a huge presentation on a number of their offerings, but as I'm a KING KONG geek first and foremost, a quote from Jordan Vogt-Roberts caught my eye like a Banana Daiquiri!
"This is going to be the biggest Kong there's ever been," boasted director Jordon Vogt-Roberts. "Not 10 foot or 30 foot, but a 100-foot ape."
Now, Jordon is a BNATTER - having attended not last year, but the year before when I played a gorgeous 35mm print of SON OF KONG, a film that plays so well with an audience, but features the Mighty Joe Young-ish sized albino 'son' of Kong. Now the one true Kong, the one featured in the utterly brilliant for all time 1933, KING KONG... his size is relative with most people feeling he goes 30ft - 50ft depending upon some of the shots you see him in. However, he never approaches anything like 100ft. But that isn't the only KING KONG, no matter how much I feel it.
KING KONG VS GODZILLA by TOHO has the tallest KING KONG in film. There are scenes where Telephone Pole tops are at mid-calf on KONG. Those are 40ft tall, allegedly, which would put TOHO KING KONG easily over 200ft tall if not 300ft tall. But that's all inexactitudes - best guess estimation. There's a claim that TOHO's Godzilla was only 170 ft tall or so - and KONG is just a hair shorter. So that KONG is definitely taller than Jordon's. I mean, this shot is Godzilla and King Kong on either side of Tokyo Imperial Palace in Tokyo. Which has a height of 51 meters or 167.323 ft high. EVIDENCE:
What is certain is that KING KONG in KONG: SKULL ISLAND will be 100ft tall. That's gonna be taller than the original Kong, Dino's Kong (though the mechanical KONG was 40ft, Rick Baker shots seem lots bigger) and Peter's Kong. But what does it mean for the future LEGENDARY film... KING KONG VS GODZILLA - when Legendary's GODZILLA is apparently 350 ft tall. It seems that Toho Kong would be the better combatant - what with his Electro-paw action.
What this does mean is that Legendary KING KONG will still be... 250 ft taller than their KING KONG. In the original KvG - it was explained that Godzilla had a brain the size of a pecan, approximately - and is pure animal instinct. Whereas KONG was a thinking animal. SO... if they can armor Kong up and give him weaponry maybe he could possibly last 15 minutes with GODZILLA... or, maybe ANT-MAN will help Kong Size up to take on GODZILLA! WHAT DOES THIS ALL MEAN?
Well, it means I'm incredibly silly to take all this so seriously. Personally, I'd rather have MIGHTY PEKING MAN vs GODZILLA... cuz they'd fall in love and make the strangest babies the world has ever seen. Giggle
