Garth Breaks The AI Poster!!

Published at:  Nov 24, 2000 7:00:29 AM CST

Hey, everyone. "Moriarty" here with some Rumblings From The Lab.

Hats off on this one, Garth. Hell of a catch. I've been as curious about AI as anyone, but I'm also sort of not that interested in spoiling the film for myself. This is one script I wouldn't read even if I had it here in the apartment. I don't want to know. I just want to see the film, see how it all washes over me. I'm fascinated by the idea of Spielberg fleshing out Kubrick's ideas. One of my favorite fantasy novels is THE TALISMAN, and it's because of the potent combination of Peter Straub and Stephen King, two authors who have strong, recognizable voices on their own. Here they are, doing something where they simply vanish as individual voices, their styles mingling to really special effect. I hope that's what we see with this film. Here's the poster:

Thanks to DARK HORIZONS for posting the first link!

Simple. Classic. Memorable. And it certainly sounds like "Supertoys Last All Summer Long." Nice to see Brian Aldriss credited on the poster. Screenplay by Steven Spielberg from a screen story by Ian Watson, eh? Sounds like they've already finalized the credit with the Writer's Guild. Spielberg's first script credit since CLOSE ENCOUNTERS. I like that the film is an Amblin'/Stanley Kubrick production. Shows you just how long this has been in the works if it still falls under the old Amblin' deal.

I know many of you have already decided to hate this film, already decided that it can't be any good, that Spielberg isn't "fit" to make it. Hogwash, I say. The idea of a sci-fi PINOCCHIO intrigues me, and the source material is a strong place to jump off from. The cast is great, with Jude Law, Haley Joel Osment, Frances O'Connor, Brendan Gleeson, and even William Hurt representing a nice cross section of actors, not movie stars. And I really do love the ad line, the poster design, the simplicity of it all. There's already a tone that's been suggested here, and I'm ready to take the ride next summer.

Now bring on the teaser trailer and make my jaw drop, please. I'm ready and waiting...

"Moriarty" out.

Have to agree with Cureo(?) the whole premice sound's like bicentennial man and that's just a bit scary but Kubrick wasn't exactly known for making film's that were, you know, for kid's.Spielberg on the other hand...but he is just about the best director around so anything could happen.Summer release date also bugg's me I've been looking forward to this for years I do not want to see a kid's movie( like E.T.) I want to see a much more adult film with a kid in it.Maybe I expect too much, Its hard to know really, that poster isn't exactly giving the game away, looks nice though.

I read the short story on which this is based

    by pkd

It doesn't really reveal much, since all it does is set up the story of a boy who is a clone. It is about 4 or 5 pages long. Its relation to the movie is that it is like the "pitch" that sets up the scenario - since the end of the story is that we find out the boy is cloned, it seems as though this will only serve as the setup - Kubrick must have some more ideas about how the story would continue - hopefully enough so that Spielberg doesn't Spielbergify it. I don;t want to spoil anything here, except to say that there is one theme here that is VERY familiar to SPielberg films - relating to the relationship between a boy and his father - its probably what drew Spielberg to it.

    by pkd

I believe that Spielberg is going to try and make this an all-encompassing film - a film that bridges his adult films with his "fluff" - but only insofar as it will be family-friendly. But that is from the tone of the story - so I imagine that Kubrick had a similar vision in mind. But make no mistake - SPielberg is going for Oscar here

    A.I.

    by nordling

Anyone who knows me knows what I think of Spielberg...the man made my childhood that much better. To see him do this is terrific. As for Kubrick, I think he's a brilliant filmmaker...and I only own two of his films, and I only want to own 2. 2001 and STRANGELOVE. The others, personally, are too flawed for me to have. I won't take anything away from the man...I do think he's brilliant. But I can't love his films, wih the exception of the 2 I mentioned. They are too cold, heartless. And sorry, but I need some sort of human feeling in my films. 2001 is a humanistic vision, a beautiful vision. And STRANGELOVE is simply the greatest satire ever made. The others, I don't dismiss them, but I don't routinely watch them as I watch the others. So I am VERY interested in seeing AI, which appeals to my heartful side as well as the Kubrick genius vision. We'll see what it will be like...I'm trying not to hype it too much. But I am looking forward to it.

Looks like Spider-Man is going to get the usual shitty treatment that comic book movies get. 10 scripts, 500 revisions, this guys in, now he's not. What the fuck is wrong with these assholes. There have been hundreds of comics written with this character and they still can't come up with a story. Organic web shooters my ass. Raimi -- read the stories that are out there. If there's nothing in the film like "for Stanley Kubrick" THEN you can bitch all you want, and I will back you 100000%, but this is just the poster guys, so let's hold off a moment. As for that link about the Harry posters, well I just want to say that IF that is a promotion for AICN, then it's just about the worst conceived marketing campaing I've ever hear of. Only one of the posters is related to the site...the rest have nothing to do with the nature of AICN, except for the color orange. And one more thing, why hasn't AICN figured out that if you're going to have a link to an external site you should absolutley make the link appear in a new browser window so you keep the person on your site. It's a simple but effective concept, really guys.

    by morgus

Hey, Mori. Not sure if you heard, but King and Straub are pretty far along on a sequel to THE TALISMAN. Apparantly, we'll get to see Jack as an adult, and in what Straub described as more "horror" than fantasy. King just let the title slip a few days ago: BLACK HOUSE. Been awhile since I read the first book, but I seem to recall a Black Hotel. And, to keep somewhat ontopic, I'm very jazzed about AI. I've not been very pleased with Spielberg's more recent fantasy/sf- themed flicks, and I'm hoping he knocks this one out of the park. With AI, LOTR, SPIDEY, and SW2 on the horizon, it's a great time to be a movie fan.

    TEASER TRAILER>>>>>>>>

    by windtalker

Hey Harry , I suggest not watching anything for the movie, not one trailer, not one teaser or snippet or frame. I strongly feel after watching UNBREAKABLE that a movie is greatly more absorbing and interesting if you go in comletely open to new imagery, ie. you have not seen anything. I have been thinking alot lately about what EPISODE 1 would have felt like if I had not watched those trailers over and over. Imagine seeing Maul's Horny mug for the first time on the big screen, or have him light up the screen with his double-sided lightsabre? Or seeing the pod race sequence completely unaware of what it would be like? I am sorry, but from now on any movie I am excited to see I will not watch the trailer for it. (I recently watched the CASTAWAY trailer and shook my head, JESUS they give away the whole movie)...So listen to me now young an old , when you are sitting in that theatre you love so much and the screen goes black and you seee COMING ATTRACTIONS>>....followed by that beautiful green LUCASFILM...just close your eyes and plug your ears and start chanting to your self, for I have seen the light my friends. And watching a movie trailer is not at the end of the tunnel, its at the end of the film! Windtalker is outtie ----------->>>

    Nice Poster!

    by movietyc

Just saw the poster, and thought I would give my personal view of it. I really liked it, I thought that the tagline was pretty good even though some might find the "his love is real" part kinda corny. The discription of the boy was good too, it was almost as if it was being read from a catalog which makes sense if you know what the story is about and even if you don't. I guess the picture it self could be looked at in few different angles too. It seems almost as if the two boys who seem to have the "1000 yard stare" (to quote from Full Metal Jacket) are on some sort of factory belt line as if they are in some sort of "mass production". I guess the periods could represent the wheels moving the belt along. There is also two of them, one black one white (or is it greyish). I take it that this represents some of the ongoing theme in every Kubrick movie of the duality of man, so you can ecspect some of the original Kube ideas to still be in this thing. Being a huge Kubrick fan I found that the that this poster much better than I thought it would be. If only Kubrick could have gotten a bigger credit seeing as how he was working on it for 20 years! Anyways, just some ideas, please post some of your own too, Thanks.

    by dwarf sidious

Know what? Steven Spielberg is a smart guy. He knows exactly what kind of legacy with which he's dealing, and this movie will be flawlessly directed. I'll bet that Osment won't cross the line into unbearable, and that we'll have the best touchstone for what it means to be human since Blade Runner.

All of the right people are on board. I am so happy to see William Hurt in a big movie again. He tripped for a few years after his split with Marlee Matlin, but the man can act. Everyone else is in place, too: Michael Kahn is editing, cinematography by the Schindler's List fellow (Kaminski?), Williams is doing the music. In short, you can put those "This will suck" comments away in your toyboxes for future wincing.

I was seven when I saw Close Encounters of the Third Kind three times, and I've seen it many since, with the filter of the divorce-ridden '70s coloring the message. No one catches the zeitgeist like Spielberg, and this one is a point of personal pride for him. Expect the best.

    Dwarf out.

why are you so defensive about people not liking spielberg? just accept the fact that not everyone likes being spoonfed overcommercialized melodrama, but don't bag on the rest of us who don't necessarily dig it. kubrick and spielberg are, to admittedly over-simplify the issue, opposites. therefore, a concept that was originally kubrick's that has been appropriated by spielberg and made a reality is obviously going to spark a heated debate. there's no need to go around trashing sk, but if you do, how about something a little more intuitive than "2001 was boring pretentious shite/clockwork organge...don't start me". check out dwarf sidious for an intelligent pro-spielberg argument, one that isn't founded on sk's supposed inferior "record" ("He has a far better record than Stanley") what kind of record, at the box office? what a vague and unintentionally subjective and therefore unintelligent statement.

To me that isn't a bad thing, but I can see how it might stand for everything that you guys feel is wrong with Spielberg. Aren't we smart enough to know what AI means? Just to be nice, I disagree with the naysayers because I like Spielberg's movies. I don't agree with his critics, just as Kubrick's fans don't agree with his critics(they're out there). Don't try to convert me, and I won't try to convert you. But anyway, flame the movie if it makes you feel good. Better to vent it on these Talkbacks than out there in the real world, right?

I haven't seen the poster yet but I hope it is good. I think Mr. Spielberg is a class act. That right there is a young man I would definitely want to visit with or have lunch, to see what makes him tick! There have been many great poster designs in the past. I believe many of Spielberg's films have had great posters! Some of you graphic designers can jump in here. I think a lot of "artistic" minded people are good with computers because it is a similar mindset, it is the concentration and the focus that is so important. For example Tiger Woods would be great with computers, judging from his artistic approach to sport. The same for Scott Hamilton, ice skater. Thanks! Ed Sr.

    by kyle.reese

He lacks any creative depth and is only capable of audience manipulation with vomit-inducing sentimentality. Worst of all, he cannot write to save his life. And if anyone mentions Close Encounters I swear I'll be tempted to slap you across the face. I've read dictionaries that were more entertaining than that movie. This last movie to have Stanley Kubrick connected will be an insult the film-maker... I can't wait for the critics to start bashing this movie... However, Haley Joel still rules, but Jude Law still annoys me with his presence... If anyone disgrees with me about Spielberg, then I say you've been watching a little too much of Dawson's Creek.

In my opinion, Close Encounters is so boring for the same reason why thousands of other films are - character. Close Encounters' characters had little or no depth to them. Flashy effects in the finale can never make up for failing to grip an audience through the characters. After a script like that, I can understand why Spielberg eased back and hired REAL writers for his following projects.

    design

    by bondt

As an actual designer, I think the poster isn't very impressive. It's a weak concept because there is nothing behind it... no real thought to be conveyed. As was said a few posts ago, they just stuck a kid in an A, rather awkwardly. The text is juvenile. "He is... He has... He weighs..." It sounds like a seventh-grader's book report. And there are too many random distractions to make it a powerful unit. Are the dots necessary? Why is the kid staring off the poster in such a weird way? Why did the designers choose to show every fold in his pants?

To me, the poster doesn't do a good job of making any statement about the character. I understand that they are trying to create a human-looking boy out of the metal, but this surely isn't very creative. "You can tell he's a boy made of metal because we colored him metal."

Personally, I think the design would have been better if they had gotten rid of all the stupid text and found a way to SHOW the characteristics instead. This one doesn't have any impact.

I still will never admire CE3K or even Saving Private Ryan (for it's blatant disregard of British/French soldiers), but I did enjoy the Indiana Jones series. I never said I "hated" this site. I've been visiting AICN for years now, starting back when it was just a simple text page. But over the years I've watched other sites pop up, and how AICN has dealt with the competition. If Ain't It Cool News breaks a story, other sites, like Dark Horizons, will credit the site. Not "Hey, this guy Harry gave me a great news tip." AICN doesn't want to admit that they were scooped on a story, hence the use of the name Garth instead of the name of the website - like I said, to make it sound like Garth is just another spy working for AICN and reporting directly to them.
I never said I hated AICN - but I do not like the way they've reacted to the competition and the widely reported stories of payola. Just report the news, credit the site that broke it, and respect the competition. And most of all - don't put words in other peoples' mouths, like you did, Silver_Shadow.
