Ahoy, squirts! Quint here with some very interesting news. I love much about Pacific Rim, but it's hard for even me to make an argument that Charlie Hunnam was the strong point of that movie. I've seen that dude ooze charisma, but when he plays a straight lead he tends to lose some of that edge and be dangerously vanilla. He's a little like Channing Tatum in that way. When they're allowed to turn on the swagger they're unforgettable, but when they are't... well, they aren't so unforgettable.
Someone who has proven time and again that he can't help but be fun to watch no matter what the role has now stepped in to lead the Jaegers in the war against the Kaiju. John Boyega has signed on to the sequel, directed by Steven S. DeKnight and produced by Legendary's Thomas Tull and, of course, Guillermo del Toro, per Deadline.
Boyega will playing the son of Stacker Pentecost, played by Idris Elba's character. Deadline says the movie starts production at the end of the year.
If the legacy of the new Star Wars is nothing but giving us John Boyega and Daisy Ridley then I call that a win already. Love watching this dude on screen and can't wait for him to kick some Kaiju ass!
