Los Angeles' 27th Regional Science Fiction & Fantasy Convention

November 24-26, 2000 at Hilton Burbank, Burbank, California

Well, geeks and geekettes, Harry and I (Father Geek), and some special friends will be attending this event on this Thanksgiving weekend in beautiful downtown Burbank. We'll be staying at the hotel and checking out the local eateries, collectible haunts, and nightspots from the 22nd thru the 27th.

Harry will be taking part in several Con events during the run of the show including, but not limited to:

The "Best SF Films of the Century" panel Friday at 4pm, and the "Hour 25" radio show taping at 5:30.

The "Harry Knowles & Friends" panel at 1:30pm Sat. A discussion between Harry and some special guests on all things SF that could end up just about anywhere on, or off this planet.

The "Why Bad SF Movies are so Good" panel at 1pm Sun.

Harry will be taking part in other public forums as well, at least one more each day. We don't know who will be on all these panels with Harry, but other panelists at the fest include: artist/icon Frank Kelly Freas, artist Bob Eggleton, Ray Bradbury, Larry Niven, J. Michael Straczynski, Len Wein, Craig Miller, Joe Dante, Tobe Hooper, Forrey Ackerman, Marv Wolfman, Orson Scott Card, Foundation Imaging's Mojo, and tons more.

And this Con like all the really good ones is a whole lot more than just panels and guests. There's a masquerade, the fest's own closed circit 24hr TV programing, live net feeds, a media/net access room, the Robert Heinlein Blood Drive, ice cream socials, A Celtic Cabaret, Lux Radio Theatre, tables representing 20 other top conventions from all over the country, dozens of wide open unearthly parties, Art rooms, The Millennium Suite fan lounge, Gaming areas, Hall costuming, Autograph areas, Belly Dancing, Children's programing, and of course a large dealers room filled with collectibles you can take home with you when its all over... for a price.

Harry and ol' Father Geek are looking forward to a fine, fun filled Thanksgiving holiday thanks to LosCon and all the phantastic phans who have worked to make it a reality. We'll be there, somewhere, the whole time. Come join us and several other members of the AICN crew for a weekend adventure you won't easily forget.

Father Geek out... I've got a plane to catch!

    I'll be there

    by azeem

But I doubt LOSCON will be any good. LA Conventions usually just suck. DragonCon and ComicCon are the best.

$45 to get in?? What a frickin' ripoff....

    by iamlegolas

I live nearby, but I aint' wastin' my mothafuckin' time with this. Besides I can see Forrest Ackerman any damn time I want! Hope this isn't anything like the Fangoria Convention that rolled into town about 6 months ago. God was that lame. 2 vendor rooms selling nothing but the shit that is stored in the back room of most comic book stores (including action figures that are all at least a year old... I was able to check everything out in both rooms in the span of 10 minutes) and a main room where there is only 2 movies out of the millions they preview that are worth your mothafuckin' time. That little day out cost me about $25+.

    Orson Scott Card Rules!

    by cooler-than-thou

"Ender's Game" and "Speaker of the Dead" are two of the best science fiction books i have ever read. The man's a bonafide genius.

    Frank Kelly Freas?

    by x-girls

Didn't he work for MAD? Tell him he's the BEST! And there is a Toronto sci-fi comic con and it's the third biggest in North America, I go annually. It's cool, Harry, you're always welcome..

    Loscon 27

    by jslyon

Hi there... I saw the post above Loscon and our apparent) "ripoff" price of $45.

Just to let you know... Loscon is not the Fangoria convention, nor anything like it. It's a fan-run, predominantly literary-focused event with a big side helping of media fandom too. There are seven tracks of programming with over 120 guest speakers, everyone from well-established SF authors (Larry Niven, Jerry Pournelle, Ray Bradbury and Orson Scott Card to name just a few) to popular artists, television writers to scientists from JPL and NASA.

It's more of a symposium rather than a media event like Fangoria, Creation, etc. and fully run as a non-profit event. (And, since you mention him, it's the 27th annual event sponsored by the Los Angeles Science Fantasy Society, the world's oldest science fiction organization, of which Forrest J. Ackerman was one of the founders in 1934).

Anyway... sorry, IamLegolas, that you won't be making it, but I just thought I'd let you know so that one day you (or anyone here) may decide to give it a try!

Oh, incidentally, inviting Harry was my idea... =) Harry, and especially Jay who I have been communicating with about their visit, have been nothing short of terrific, and I'm glad to have them here!

    Cons

    by 433

Yup. If you get in early on most fan-run cons, it's pretty cheap. The one I work on, CONvergence (in Minneapolis July 6-8, guests Harry and Father Geek), charges $20 for the whole weekend if you register at the previous year's con, $25 until Dec. 31, $35 until about a month and a half before the con, and $50 at the door. Basically, we like to know how many people are coming as early as possible so we can get the hotel rooms reserved, events planned and the free food & drink bought. None of us make dime one of these things, we do it because it's fun and we want people to have a good time. What does that money get you, you ask? Well, in our case: local, national, and international guests; panels, readings, and workshops; a concert, live "radio" show, DJed dance, and masquerade; a 24-hour anime room; a 24-hour film room; a dealers room; an art show; a "consuite" with free snacks, drinks, and other food; a 24-hour free coffee bar; and a two-level poolside area with 40+ parties. Basically, a 3-day drunken geek orgy of sci-fi. Check out http://www.convergence-con for more information! See you at the Butt-Numb-a-Thon!

    SHAUN LYON SPEAKS THE TRUTH!!

    by joshuaf

Don't let IAMLEGOLAS' singular wit fool you, LOSCON is worth its buck!! The room parties alone are worth the price of admission. As for Shaun and the rest of the LOSCON staff... you'll never come across a more dedicated group of people working their asses off (on their own spare time!) to keep fandom alive and kicking into a new millinium.

    Sorry

    by iamlegolas

Apology for spewing my venom about the last Fangoria Convention on here. Just reading about another Con just set me off is all. My anger has nothing to do with LosCon or the people who run it.
