UPDATED: Cormac McCarthy's BLOOD MERIDIAN finally coming to the big screen?

UPDATE: As quickly as this story appeared it disappeared. THR says that this project is already shelved because James Franco and his producers forgot to, you know, secure the rights to the book even though he had attached significant starpower to the adapation.

You know how it goes.

So, I guess we'll still have to live without a film version of Blood Meridian for a bit longer.

Original story below:

Ahoy, squirts! Quint here. Deadline says that Cormac McCarthy's crazy western Blood Meridian is finally coming to the big screen after years of attempts to adapt the uber violent book for film. And the guy to finally make it happen? James Franco, apparently.

It helps that he has some big guns attached to the project, which he would direct and co-star in. Tye Sheridan will play The Kid and he'll be joined by Russell Crowe and Vincent D'Onofrio. I'm assuming D'Onofrio will be playing Judge Holden, but that could just be me projecting his Wilson Fisk persona onto the menacing bald scalphunter.

The big question mark for me is Franco. I love the dude as an actor, but so far his directing work has left me pretty cold. However, this is something he's been wanting to do for a long time so he's obviously got a passion for bringing this story to the screen. Maybe he'll step up this time?

The movie is still looking for money at Cannes, so who knows if this will end up actually happening, but it looks more solid than it has before. What do you folks think?
