Our first look at Scarlett Johansson as Japanese super-heroine Motoko Kusanagi in GHOST IN THE SHELL!

Looks fine, I guess.

You know, other than she’s, um, super, super-white, and they’re apparently insisting on calling her character Motoko Kusanagi.

Not much to say about this. It is what it is. Maybe this movie will be good, maybe not. Certainly can’t tell based on this still, or what we’ve heard so far. Am I personally dying to see how this long-gestating adaptation finally came together? Not particularly. GHOST IN THE SHELL is even more comfortably nestled into the stylized, surreal world of anime than AKIRA, and who the hell wants an American live-action AKIRA, right?

As for the whole whitewashing thing? Well, it’s weird as fuck that they’re still calling her Motoko Kusanagi, but honestly, it’s not unthinkable there you could craft a decent cyberpunk story about Section 9 featuring an all-white cast (plus Takeshi Kitano). I’m sure there’s plenty enough distaste for this approach out there without me weighing in.

Whether Johansson’s take on Kusanagi will be different enough from Black Widow or LUCY to register as a new character is yet to be seen, but for now, we have her bob and whited tips to gawk at as the film shoots in New Zealand. How you guys feel about Kusanagi’s look in this flick?

GHOST IN THE SHELL dares anime fans to freak out on March 31st, 2017.
