IN BRUGES writer/director Martin McDonagh’s film THREE BILLBOARDS OUTSIDE EBBING, MISSOURI already had three ace lead actors, with Frances McDormand, Sam Rockwell, and Woody Harrelson, and they can add two other A+ thesps to the roster: John Hawkes and Peter Dinklage.
The Dink, Hawkes, and MOONRISE KINGDOM/MANCHESTER BY THE SEA actor Lucas Hedges have joined the film, which also stars Caleb Landry-Jones (so good in WAR ON EVERYONE, directed by Martin’s brother, John Michael McDonagh). McDormand plays a mother who buys three billboard ads to help find the man who raped and killed her daughter, while Hawkes plays her ex-husband, Hedges plays her son, and Dink plays an Ebbing denizen carrying a torch for her.
The three leads of IN BRUGES were all fantastic, and McDonagh expanded his cast to great effect for SEVEN PSYCHOPATHS, and now this one has yet another irresistible collection of excellent actors. It seems like a lot of fun to deliver McDonagh’s dialogue while navigating the bullet-riddled worlds of his films, so I get why he’s able to get actors like these for roles that are sometimes basically cameos. When you have principals from FARGO, MOON, TRUE DETECTIVE, GAME OF THRONES, and TOO LATE in your film, the die is cast for something that could potentially pop right off the screen and into our hearts.
