Arnold tidbits about T3 and TOTAL RECALL 2 at Los Angeles Comic Con yesterday!

Published at:  Nov 13, 2000 5:21:22 AM CST

Hey folks, Harry here... Arpin was hanging out at the Los Angeles Comic Book and Science Fiction Convention yesterday to be awed by the Austrian Oak.... I met Arnold once a long long long time ago here in Austin... and I have to admit... he's quite a personality in person... Confidence like you wouldn't believe... Now the interesting part about the below is this T3 shooting next year thing. Alright, so after COLLATERAL DAMAGE, he would segue straight into T3, then right into DOC SAVAGE? or CONAN? Then over at Coming Attractions, Patrick is dropping hints that TOTAL RECALL 2 might still be a possibility (stay tuned to CA for more on that this week!)... SO... It seems that the active development world of Arnie is..... T3, DOC SAVAGE, CONAN, TOTAL RECALL 2 and TRUE LIES 2. Now it seems as though through all of this Arnie is not really paying attention to the impending Actors Strike... but perhaps he feels it will be settled well before then... Well, stay tuned... Arnie's on the move and doing a ton of media appearances... We're sure to hear more!

I just came from THE LOS ANGELES COMIC BOOK AND SCIENCE FICTION CONVENTION
where Arnold was a guest. What a thrill to meet this great celebrity. What a
star! He talked very openly to everyone, answered many, many questions and
signed autographs. He talked about T3. He said they were doing the finishing
touches on the script and would probably start shooting next year. Someone
had asked about TOTAL RECALL 2 and he said he sent back the script, because
it was too much of a rehash of the first film. His personality just shined
and I was very impressed with how he addressed the audience. Had he been
running for president I would voted for him. What a thrilled and a privilege
to meet him in person.

L. Arpin

Arnold needs to wipe his sequel slate clean

    by nal2001

Honestly, does anyone really want to see "Total Recall 2" or "Terminator 3" without Cameron or Linda Hamilton (and presumably, Robert Patrick)? I'm a bit of an Arnold fan, even though he's wavered of late, but I realize that "The Sixth Day" and "Collateral Damage" will hardly be what he needs to re-energize his career. He should narrow it down to "King Conan" (Long live John Milius!), and "True Lies 2" (which, unlike the Terminator series, has characters I would like to see re-visited). "Doc Savage" sounds great if it comes to fruition, though I would like to see Arnold perhaps take a supporting role in a film (who didn't get a kick out of Steven Seagal getting killed off a half-hour into "Executive Decision"?)

    Terminator 3: Pay Day

    by kyle.reese

Poor poor James Cameron. He created this amazing story and now Schwarzenegger's gonna graffiti all over it. What is the world coming to. This film will be swamped by the 2002 releases anyway. The Matrix 2, Episode II, and undoubtly more. It's gonna be the year of the 2's (pretty ironic it's 2002)

Of course, all this depends on whether or not Arnie can revive h

    by roguewriter

Let's face it, the guy's day is over. He'll never GET to a point where he gets to make CONAN, TOTAL RECALL 2 or that wonderful CRUSADE we've been hearing about lo these past 4-5 years unless he miraculously revives his career with SIXTH DAY and at least one more through-the-roof blockbuster. He's quickly becoming as much a parody of himself as Stallone, who really ought to be put out to pasture once and for all now that GET CARTER has proven he's down for the count. Don't get me wrong -- I love Arnie. TERMINATOR (the original, not the flashy but altogether inferior sequel) was one of the four or five "movie-movie" events of my teenage years. But his stuff has gotten lame, lame, lame. The very idea that TRUE LIES deserves a sequel is laughable. And T3? I'd rather watch JINGLE ALL THE WAY a dozen times, fer crissakes... Give it a rest for awhile, Arnie. Make something worthwhile instead of these gimmicky retreads. Otherwise, say hello to retirement and full-time life with that skeletal Kennedy witch you married... ;)

    by malkovich

Roguewriter stop blabbering about. INFERIOR sequel, are you on crack, T2 is one of the if not the best sci-fi/time travel/robot movies of all time. It is so well thought out (T2 not T1 and T2 put together)and the production quality is still to this day the best i have ever seen from any "event" movie. T2 was the turning point in CG and in showing the value of a character driven film. God i could go on for hours as assume most of the sane talkbackers could about the significance and greatness of T2. I agree T3 is one of the worst ideas of all time, the script sounds like shit, with no cameron or hamilton what is the point, and most of all they arent exploring anything new just rehasing T2 with a chick. Oh yeah and making sarah conner go back to this parranoid freak is outrageous, she grows throughout both terminator films and by the end of the second, the true ending i might add she is at a new level of understanding. God to contradict her words at the end of the film by making T3 will piss me off to no avail. anyway Roguewriter you are a complete idiot and i hope you are banned from aicn for that comment. Oh yeah and true lies 2 doesnt sound amazing but get over your high and mighty self you are just an idiot!

The Terminator IS superior to T2...

    by kyle.reese

on so many levels. I still believe that T2 is one of the greatest sequels of all time (next to ALIENS), but compared to the original it isn't as amazing as you make it sound. The Terminator was brilliant because there was circularity to it. By the end it all fits together. T2's ending didn't work as well in my opinion. And another thing, T2 got very very boring towards the middle whilst the original was gripping all the way through. And as for effects, it was The Abyss that was revolutionary, T2 just expanded on that water tenticale.

I Don't Know why Arnuld is so Confident

    by cooler-than-thou

His last few pictures have been the stuff shit is made of. And I'll tell you something else, if he's planning to do another 'Total Recall 2' and think that it'll be any good, he'd better wake the fuck up because he's dreaming. As much as I'd like to see another Recall film, I don't want the original to be sullied by a God-awful sequel. my pessimistic attitude toward another film is based solely on the fact that he rejected the first script because HE thought that it was too much like the original. Well hasn't the man already proved that his judgment isn't as sharp as it once was? I heard somewhere (possibly this site) that when Maria saw early screenings of "End of Days" she told him that it was too scary and needed to be toned down. Too scary? What the fuck? It's a HORROR movie. Apparently, he did as he was told because the only thing that was scary about "End of Days" was how fucking horrible it was. The Arnold of 'T2' fame must've been abducted by aliens and replaced by this insidiously boring doppelganger. Maybe it's some evil plot to dull the world into submission. Or he could just be getting old and senile. Eh, who knows. I just hope he finds the script that's going to make me put my foot in my mouth. Arnold's a legend and no one wants to see him make another badass flick more than me. But if that's just not in the cards, he needs to stop. now.

    To each his own, Malkovich...

    by roguewriter

But I stand by my opinion -- TERMINATOR 2 is a great movie; I enjoyed it very much. But it doesn't touch the raw grit and heroism of the first film. It's flashy, more calculated, and based around what can only be referred to as a bullshit premise. (The whole "Oh, by the way, Skynet actually sent TWO Terminators back to erase the existence of John Connor -- we just didn't tell you about the other one." Bah. I'm not bothered by the idea that Kyle Reese, as a grunt from the future, wouldn't personally have that information -- I'm bothered by the calculation and awkwardness of such a plot point.) And frankly, I couldn't stand Edward Furlong, whose performance weakened the story, nor Linda Hamilton, whose character was so deranged as to ruin all my original love for her. As grouchy and cynical as this place sometimes gets over the kid in PHANTOM MENACE, I can't help but think Furlong would have received the same ugly vitriol had the flick debuted this year............ And like I said, this is all my opinion, kiddo. =)

Roguewriter, I agree that Edward Furlough was a pain in the ass

    by cooler-than-thou

But Linda Hamilton was fucking awesome. Yeah she was deranged but who wouldn't have been after the events in the first Terminator? Her world was turned upside down. She was relentlessly pursued by a near-invincible killer and told that her son was mankind's last hope in a great war that was a mere decade or two away. I don't think anyone in these Talkbacks would've held up mentally with something like that rolling around in the head. That knowledge made her stronger and Hamilton conveyed that with perfection. But yeah, Furlough was just a whiny, pussyass little bastard that annoyed the shit out of me. Cameron should've hired that little kid from 'Robocop 2'

Who needs it? Just watch the T2 DVD

    by i am_notreal

...since all T3 would be is another set of battles between Arnold and some super-powered villain Terminator. It couldn't outdo the battles in T2, which was itself just an upgraded version of T1. There is no reason whatsoever for this movie. The Alien movies were killed by the CG dreck that was Alien Resurrection (after Alien3 it had a faint pulse, but Resurrection threw the switch). Isn't one needlessly tampered with franchise enough????

Has anyone read/seen Stephen King's THE STAND. I reckon Arnold should make a movie version of that story and play Tom Cullen, or Randall Flagg. That would be cool (not).

    Reply to Talkback

  • The story should take place in the future. Most of the best shots from the first movies were the future shots. Hunter/Killers, cyborg war, underground resistance. What a Goldmine!! From what I hear they're gonna make a frickin T2 style flick, but t1000 will be a chick and Arnie will have to save the day. Crap!! It should be all about the war on the machines and the human struggle in the future. At one point in the movie they will send Kyle and a terminator into the past. Fill in the blanks here.......It would be PHAT!! This movie is gonna blow. As big a disappointment as Conan the Destroyer...........

    by jskerr

Sure, he was a whiny little bastard, but that's the CHARACTER. You know? Any decent actor would have been the same way; that's the kind of character you'd get if your mom was a wacko who dragged you all over hell and then got put in a booby-hatch. Especially when he was stuck in the burbs with no discipline and too many toys.

I hate to sound pedantic, but Cameron didn't come up with the idea for "Terminator", he ripped off an episode of the classic '60s "Outer Limits" called "Soldier" by Harlan Ellison. It starred Michael Ansara as a soldier from the future, "Quarlo" who in this instance accidentally ends up in (the then) present day. Drawback is that an enemy soldier has come through the portal as well. If you get the opportunity, take the time to watch it, the similarities are stunning. I remember at the time of Terminator's release, there were stories of an out of court settlement to Ellison due to the identical nature of the production to Ellison's .

Didn't See The Outer Limits But SOLDIER ....

    by buzz maverik

...was one of Ellison's greatest short stories, reprinted in THE ESSENTIAL ELLISON. I don't remember an enemy soldier in the story, but the future war and all the horror were there, with some great irony. Qarlo is useless to the military because all he knows about are 900 thread beams and psychic commands, so he becomes a human anti-war statement. I tend to side with authors over filmmakers, and it's clear Cameron has read a lot of Ellison. Cameron claimed that Ellison's beef was centered around their use of common science-fiction props such as robots and time travel, and there's a point there, but I'm glad Ellison got that THANK YOU credit. It's unfortunate that most authors aren't as tough as Ellison, the way Hollywood rips them off without even a nod. Two of the most obvious examples: Gee, do ya think Sean Penn might have read Mitchell Smith's STONE CITY before writing his script for THE CROSSING GUARD? And Jan de Bont came up with the "story" for SPEED 2: CRUISE CONTROL, probably after he finished reading James W. Hall's far superior BUZZCUT. Of course, THE TERMINATOR was a good movie, so an author wouldn't mind having his name connected with it, whereas the other two....

T3 without Cameron can easily work. Remember that cameron stole (and was subsequently successfully sued by harlan ellison) the idea for T1. Camerons a great director, but there are plenty of competent directors who can do the same if not much better. I think fincher would do a great job with the material.
