Nobody could ever accuse THE PURGE films of being subtle. The series is set in a near-future America where all crime is legal for one night every year - the theory being that the populace is allowed to cleanse their violent tendancies and remain peaceful and docile for the remaining 364 days. It has looked at how the wealthy are able to escape the horrors outside their doors by barracading themselves in behind expensive security systems, and how the nature of the Purge targets and eliminates the poor. The series isn't exactly elegant in its statements, but it offers interesting food for thought in an entertaining package.
James DeMonaco is back with the third film, and is absolutely not pulling any punches. THE PURGE: ELECTION YEAR sees Frank Grillo reprising his character from THE PURGE: ANARCHY (whoo-hoo!), now bodyguard to a presidential nominee (Elizabeth Mitchell) campaigning to end Purge Night once and for all. Naturally, this isn't making her the most popular voice amongst the establishment, and what better opportunity than Purge Night to eliminate her from the running?
The series continues to widen its scope to give us a bigger and bigger picture of what this society is like and how it functions, which keeps giving fans a little something new with each film.
