We all know that a 30-second Super Bowl ad costs more than most of us will make in our entire lifetime, but I think Fox was smart to spend that kinda cash to get their little British flick some play during the game.
After all, EDDIE THE EAGLE totally follows the sports-movie playbook to the letter, down to its 80s-themed score and underdog hero, but with a lead performance and level of heart that gives it its own identity. I can’t overstate how crucial Taron Egerton’s performance is to this film, as his too-dorky-for-life Michael Edwards determines to be a champion ski-jumper because…he’s gotta be good at something, right?
I’m not a big sports guy, so I have no idea of how effective having these football stars express their enthusiasm for the flick will be on the average viewer, but whatever their approach, it was the right move to get this flick in the consciousness of as many sports fans as possible. Hopefully, it translates to box-office success for this relatively small film when it comes out later this month.
Can’t wait to see the other spots that’ll be debuting during the game!
