Andres Muchietti and Jessica Chastain may not think MAMA should get a sequel, but Universal certainly does, and have hired STARRY EYES writer-directors Kevin Kolsch and Dennis Widmyer to direct it.
Chastain “is not expected to return”, nor is (apparantly) executive producer Guillermo Del Toro.
Presumably, they’ll be dealing with a whole new family and “Mama,” as the story of the first film wrapped itself up rather conclusively. I don’t know how much narrative room there is to explore with this premise/setup, but I’m sure that wouldn’t stop Uni from pressing forward after the movie cut a significant profit three years ago (Jesus, has it been that long already?).
I wasn’t as taken as some with STARRY EYES, though I will say that Kolsch and Widmyer, like Muschietti on MAMA, coaxed a strong performance out of their lead actress (Alex Essoe), which a MAMA sequel would most likely require to work. They don’t seem like the kind of talents who would take a throwaway project for some cheap exposure, so I reckon they’ve got some interesting ideas on how to follow up Muschietti’s original.
Anyone stoked to let the STARRY EYES guys try and scare you with the ghost of a MAMA?
