Sandler comments on upcoming Paul Thomas Anderson/Sandler project!
Hey folks, Harry here... Now I've been a bit unnerved by all of this Paul Thomas Anderson directing an Adam Sandler comedy. You see... I am not a Sandler fan. In my eyes, the idea of taking Paul Thomas Anderson... who I feel is one of the top ten filmmakers I watch every move of.... and having him make an Adam Sandler comedy would be like forcing Martin Scorsese to do a Bad News Bears movie... as appealling as that may sound though... look for it in a couple of years... hehehe.... Anyway, the quote below from Sandler gives me hope though.... PTA told me in an email once that this wasn't an Adam Sandler Film..... it is a Paul Thomas Anderson film. He also said that it wasn't an overt comedy... any more so than BOOGIE NIGHTS or MAGNOLIA.... I mean, certainly... there were some funny funny scenes in those movies... but then came the brutal flipside... that side two of life where it kicks you in the jaw and pisses on your crumpled unconcious form... For many comedians.... particularly young comedians... there are break out roles... moments where an artist... a director takes a look at their talents... observes their quiet moments.... and says, "Yeah, I know how to use that." In my perception, that is what is going to happen here. PTA sees something in Sandler... he sees something that he can use and give us that we have not seen yet... perhaps glimpses of it in THE WEDDING SINGER between the schtick.... and that's the challenge of the film for him.... To change our perceptions of Adam Sandler. Personally, I welcome that. Here's the scoop from our man in Michigan......
What up Harry... I don't know if you've heard this already, but in the University of Michigan's Daily newspaper, there's an interview with Adam Sandler about his latest, Little Nicky, and Sandler says something about being approached by PT Anderson for a role in an upcoming film.
"This kid Paul Thomas Anderson. He's writing a movie right now that he wants me to do... It's a different thing for me. It's not a comedy like we would do. It's a PTA movie. There's comedy in it and there's insanity in it and it's very interesting, a very cool thing."
The article was by Christopher Cousino and Ben Goldstein and might still be up at MichiganDaily.Com.
Keep the good stuff coming.

If anyone can make Adam Sandler act it's Anderson. Also curious what Tarantino has in store for him. -
Sandler has given me doubts.
-
I like PTA quite a bit and I can take the occasional dose of Sandler. I'd prolly check it out
-
I think that he gets a bad rap in most of the talk backs. Hell the guy just likes to make movies and have fun, the movies he usually make dont cost anything to produce and they make money so someone is obviously watching them. Well I think with time that Sandler will make better movies. Look at the garbage movies that Tom Hanks used to make.
-
PTA Anderson will probably write a kick ass script and Sandler is a good actor. It's only his latest movies he's gone spycho, but in the wedding singer he was pretty normal. He can act and does have talent. This movie could be a pleasent suprise from the two. I'll go to watch it.
-
But if this runs closer to the "Wedding Singer" than any other Sandler movie it may actually turn out ok
-
A bunch of A&E editors were invited to a screening of Little Nicky last week, followed by a Q&A session with Adam Sandler in Chicago. That's my question that I asked! His response was actually a bit longer than that. Here's the full transcription from my paper, the Valparaiso University Torch. I asked about his projects with PTA and Tarantino, and he had this rather evasive response: "Oh yeah, this kid Paul Thomas Anderson came by the set of Nicky, talked about all our movies, he said he was writing a movie right now that he wants me to do. I like his movies, loved Magnolia, thought it was unbelievable. Boogie Nights was awesome. He wrote this movie for me and we

Just a month after Boilermaker's death, he has to undergo this kind of treatment from Harry? Intolerable!!
-
regardless of your opinion on PTA's films (mine is very high) you can't doubt that he is a very talented and deep(ly worthy) filmaker...sandler certainly has talent and charisman, and the wedding singer shows more of this than any of his other films which range from mildly amusing to poor (imo). What the hell, I'll watch it.

I actually like Sandler a lot and PTA ...to a degree...but I love how Harry bashes Paul Anderson and when his mighty PTA (ten best directors??? they guy made ONE decent film!!! oooh he 'borrowed' from I am Cuba he is god..) does a Sandler film he looks down his nose until the guy has to email him!!! What the hell? If you love the guy have faith, its that simple and NO director is beyond reproach or commercialism. PA does a Zombie flick -PTA does a Sandler comedy which is more reputable? PA films are crap but Rodriguez who was responsible for the Faculty...we CANT WAIT for Spy Kids. Hypocracy I says.
-
For some reason I didn't find Magnolia all that enjoyable. In fact, it was kind of ludicrous. In trying so hard to be clever, the film ended up being overly long, drawn out and quite frankly, an egotistical mindtrip by a second-rate director. I never felt that any character in that film got to have a "moment" when they could just be their character. They were never anything more than pawns manipulated in a very non-subtle manner by someone who should learn what editing is. As for a Sandler/PTA project: HMM. . .we're teaming up a pretentious ass with someone who's making very popular movies by not pretending to be anything more than a popular comic. Interesting. If it's under 110 minutes, I'll go see it just for kicks. In the second-run theater. With someone who will distract me in all the "artsy" parts.

Harry, it is a crime to speak ill of 'Buttermaker' that way. The original BAD NEWS BEARS is one of our country's great sport movies. Just because Harry was like Rudy Stein as a kid and didn't have the balls to take one for the team, he shouldn't be mad at 'Buttercrud'!!!!

This is the man who brought us three incredible films. one after
by docsisx
It started with the dark noir "Hard Eight", then there was the fluffy porn flick "Boogie Nights", and finally there was..."Magnolia", a sprawling epic which was simply beautiful. Besides, Sandler showed some skill in "Big Daddy" and "The Wedding Singer", he is very natural. It will work out, I think.
-
Most of Sandler's movies have
been so forgettable that I have
a hard time remembering which ones
I've seen and which ones I
haven't. But I thought he did
some good work on SNL... Some
bad work, too, but I see
a kernel of talent in there that
someone like PTA or Tarantino
could nurture into a great
performance... or at least a
passable one. -
Can you see the irony in accusing
someone of ripping off Tarantino?
It's more likely that both of
them just happen to rip off the
same directors independently of
one another. -
harry, if you dislike sandler so much, how come we all had to look at his ugly mug on that little nicky banner on your site for two weeks? anyway, you are right that if pta reigns in his schtick that it will probably be worth watching. i especially like how sandler, a guy who's made a career out of doing cute little baby-talk voices can refer to pta as a kid. and whoever said that they would only go see this flick if it is under 110 minutes, well...thank god for your mtv, i guess. i'll agree that magnolia could have been shorter and could have done without one or two of those characters/plot lines, but it was still one of the best flicks of last year. the frog scene was beautiful--all of these extremely self centered characters and their myopic problems get reduced to a common level by this abstract, surreal event. and the best part was that he just put it out there to let the audience digest on its own instead of smashing them over the head with it a couple dozen times, as apparently some talkbackers prefer. and sleazy g, marsyas was right, pta didn't rip off tarantino in that scene with the drug dealer and the firecrackers, he ripped off scorsese--if i wanted to, i could make an argument that film school is the last place anyone should go to learn how to make movies, but i won't.

I saw a few people (sundown inparticular) badmouth Paul Thomas Anderson and I'm sorry, you just can't do it. It's impossible. Harry noted Anderson as one of the "top ten directors" working today and he's more along the lines of the top five. Insulting him is like insulting Quentin Tarantino. This guy didn't make 1 good film, he made 3; and they weren't good they were all great. I own all of them on DVD and cherish them. I understand if you DON'T LIKE his movies, but you simply can't badmouth him. I'm sorry, there is no reader or poster on this website that could ever write a screenplay as good as Anderson. I know some of you probubly think you are good and all and I'm not saying you aren't; but you ain't no Paul Thomas Anderson. And the same goes with directing. If you want to see a movie with an oustanding screenplay, watch Hard Eight. If you want to see a movie with outstanding filming, watch Boogie Nights. If you want to see a movie with outstanding everything, watch Magnolia. That's not to say Boogie Nights didn't have a good script and Hard Eight wasn't properly filmed but I think you understand what I'm saying. And then fuck, watch a Fiona Apple music video. I know some don't agree with the whole Adam Sandler idea but I don't think Anderson is only going to remember what he learned at SNL and forget everything else before him. He's a true genius when it comes to filmmaking and don't even fucking dare badmouthing him. I'm sorry, as much as you'd like to, you really can't; unless you want to come off sounding like a complete retard...
-
if you read my post I wasnt "bad mouthing" PTA just pointing out Harrys hypocracy and ability to turn his opinion of someone on a dime and turn back if they email him. READ HIS STORY and see what I mean. If Paul Anderson were to email Harry would he give him the same credit as a Rodriguez who makes equally bad/good films. PTA is a solid director and writer but because he is working with that Sandler guy the snobby Harry factor kicks in. Then because PTA emails him his opinion shifts. I dont think Harry realizes how much power he wields and needs to be a little more responsible with his opinions... Now for PTA Boogie Nights was genius and I thought a great film BUT I think some overestimate it because the subject matter is so trendy and flashy. It was solid and I understand the reasons why it is great BUT Hard Eight I felt was AWFUL and Magnolia had some major problems as a film. AND I CAN SAY WHAT I WANT!!!! THAT IS THE NATURE OF THIS SITE!!! I may never be a better writer than PTA, he is damn good but I know what I like and I know what works and Magnolia and Hard8 were LAME films. One film does not a great director make. He has A WAYS TO GO before he could claim to be another Kubrick- so sorry again! And to reiterate I can say I don't like him that much as a director. I don't like him that much. Thats my right. Am I retarded, maybe but I don't put much stock in those tests they did on me as a kid. And besides the little school bus was more fun.

Hello. You can call me...um...dusk. Or sunrise. Whichever. I would just like to point out that I am almost entirely incomprehensible, and that I can't spell. Also, when I type talkback posts I'm so overwhelmed by both my hatred for Knowles' "hypocracy" and my own sheer cleverness, that my breathing sounds like a hissing cat. Gosh, I just love being me.

My sweetie and I never cried so hard at the movies as when we first experienced Magnolia. We went back to see it again and took a few friends along. Rented it on video and watched it again. Then the awesome double dvd drops and we still can't get enough of it. Then the fuckin killer Boogie Night double dvd drops. Both of them particularly Boogie Nites are perfect examples of why we needed dvd's to come along! I am so far up PTA's ass right now that I can't even think of eloquent-enough words to wax his car with. I'm surprised that so many people think he's not all he's cracked up to be, maybe y'all just don't get it, but it makes me happy to see all the PTA fans who chimed in above. Now that I've jizzed all over PTA, let me jizz all over Adam as well, who is a hilarious comic actor. He's such a performer that he can't even be himself on Letterman; his promo appearance for LNicky was all jokes. But that's OK with me. This indicates he is a shy sweet boy at heart with lots of love to give. (release the good!) I have felt a little let down with some of his material, on tv, record, and in the movies, but for the most part he's kept my attention for like 10 years. I think his movies have all been at least "good" and I would vote for HappyG and WSinger as being "great". You just have to let that shit sink in. this weekend I'll go see Little Nicky but I'll be thinking of Adam's future, imagining him competing with John C. Reilly for the affections of Melora Walters or some shit like that. I'm just glad to see the readers of my favorite website of the moment engaged in such heavy debate about an upcoming movie from two of my favorite players which won't have a single mutant power, lightsabre, kung fu kick, wizard, gnome, big fake CGI dragon, spaceship, power ring crystal, or any of that shit, in it! Hey, we're a lot less faggotty bunch of nerds than I thought!
-
I happen to agree with Castor. I seriously don't think that you can "badmouth" this director. The camera work he does is remarkable; completely fluid and smooth. And I really hate to resort to the "only reason you don't like the movie is because you don't GET it" argument, but clearly this is the case. The man is a brilliant director. There, I said it. His films are beautiful and sincere and if you don't like them, it isn't because Paul Thomas fucked up, it's because you don't get it. Not that that is a bad thing, I guess, but resorting to calling his movies overrated, ridiculous, or dare I say, "long", is clearly a blatant clue into your own ignorance.
-
I cannot sit silently and watch the bashing of my favorite contemporary, American filmmaker (and believe me I have very few 'favoirte' anythings).
Yes, I am biased. I love all three of his films - so perhaps anything I say is merely opinion and not worth anything to you - but I have yet to read here what I think is a legitimate criticism of PTA's films.
Yes 2 of his 3 films are LONG. How does this inherently make a film bad? Anybody that didn't realize that Magnolia was over 3 hours, before they committed themselves to watching it, needs to stop taking their short-attention span out on everyone else. Boogie Nights could have been shorter, but it could have been alot longer (the script was) - who's to say it would have been better or worse either way?
-Ok. The opening shot of Boogie Nights has been done before. Did PTA 'rip off' Scorsese's Goodfellas? "I would be willing to bet" that Scorsese got the idea from an earlier movie as well. Because this has been done before, does that mean the shot is somehow a bad use of the camera? (In PTA's case, opening with this 'rip off of a shot' was a stroke of, dare I invoke the hyperbolic term, "genius" - even if it wasn't an entirely original idea).
Like the other Pro-PTA posters above, I can understand someone not liking his films. Yes, ALL films are open to criticism (and any film can be labeled a 'good' or 'bad' films for so many different reasons). However, saying a film is bad and saying you don't like it are two entirely different things. I love PTA's films. But I also think they are well written, well translated to the screen, and well received to my head.
-Now that i've said that here's a a criticism of Magnolia that I've restled with: is there signifigant closure to the Dixon/Worm subplot? If not, what does this say about the way they are treated? (I tend to think that their underdevelopment adds to a greater sense of their marginalization in society - at least before the 'Exodus event').
-Ok, now that I've sufficiently displayed my pretentiousness (something that I find to be a positive in PTA's films), I will stop for now. -
...anyone else think that that Castor guyt is a bit crazy?
BTW - Hard Eight or whatever you want to call it was dull, dull, dull. Oh, and it sucked. T^hnak you. NIB HIGH FOOTBALL RULES!!!!!!!!!! -
After watching the documentary on the Magnolia dvd I wouldn't be surprised to find out that the worm was cut out because he's the fuckin "Make 7 Up YOurs" guy, also from MadTV, and he would have been this familiar guy, reducing the mysterious worm to a goofy cameo, with unwanted publicity from it, etc.. Also there's some crazy diner holdup scene with Dixon & the Worm that the movie probably could have done without -- reminiscent of the too-violent Becky Barnett scene cut from Boogie Nites. Probably just a coincidence that all these characters are African-American, but you have a point that it marginalizes them even more. Then there's the cut scenes with Frank TJ Mackey where he exploits a chick played by whatsername who played the booking assistan chick on Larry Sanders. Maybe PTA thought she was a too-recognizable tv personage as well.
-
I really hate to draw this section off from it's original point (the PTA/Sandler movie), and further into PTA bashing but... Look, I know some of you saw the Magnolia extras on the DVD. I bought the Magnolia DVD the first week it came out. I had heard some hype about the flick, but had not yet seen it. The DVD looked intersting with some cool extras, and was on sale. I had a few extra bucks so I picked it up. A real close friend of mine warned me about buying movies on DVDs I have not yet seen, but I stood by my purchase. I liked Boogie Nights enough, pretentious, a little borrowed, but overall well writen and directed. He had seen Magnolia and liked it a bit, not crazy for it, but found it enjoyable. So I watched it. A bit long, but a pretty good movie I thought. For better or for worse, it wasn't just mindless entertainment. Well that was great, I saw it, but of corse I thought the movie had an emotional punch to it enough that it was a good amount of time before I saw it again. I had not yet even seen the extras, for which I bought it for in the first place.
About 2 months later I sat down with a bunch of my college friends and watched it again. I found that I enjoyed the movie even more this second time I saw it. After it was over, and everyone dispersed from my room, I decided I'd sit down and finaly watch the rest of the extras. I was interested by mst of them, and found the deleted scenes and infomercial great. But, then I saw the extra that disturbed me greatly. The "Magnolia Diary". In all of my time concentrating on contemparary and classic filmakers, both in school, and for personal enjoyment, rarely hae I seen such a pretentcious egomaniac. He referred to Magnolia twice in it as the "best movie ever made." He gave the actors no personal freedom with their charecters. And he seemed to be ludicrously rigid to the scripts direction. He seemed so pompus and conceited, I am at a loss to do it justice. Rent it and see for yourself. Though this did not, for me, detract from the quality of the movie, I still feel that Paul Thomas Anderson will find himself a legend solely in his own mind.
As if that wern't enough, having told this info to my afformentioned friend, he informed me as to his own views, which entirely parraleld mine reguarding this "screen legend-in-the-making". Apparently PTA had, when, in an interview, asked about Fight Club, made some entirely disparaging remarks towards the film's director David Fincher. Fight Club, I will admit, is my now favorite movie of all time. Though, I feel that perhaps PTA thought his remarks were warented, due to his later admission that it came mostly for his anger of his percieved treatment of testicular cancer affected men in the film, I should think he would think a bit more and perhaps direct his anger more towards Jim Uhls, the screanwriter, or Chuck, Palahnuiuk, the author of the novel. I think instead, his remarks were not a result as much of his dislike of the content, but of his competition. I won't even bring up the subject of the Academy Awards. I like some of PTA's films, but I strongly dislike the man. He may be a brilliant filmaker, one of the greats of our time, or maybe he's an entirely overrated hack, or maybe simply something in-between.
In any case, I feel that this movie will be interesting. Perhaps this might be a personality or ego clash the likes of which humanity has not yet seen. Perhaps, it will turn out to be a smart, funny flick, with a break-through preformance by an underrated serio-comic actor, but I think only time will tell.
My fealing is, I'll see it when it comes out, just to know, reguardless of my, or anyone else's preformed oppinions or prejudices. Then again, that's just me. -
I just...find it...somewhat amusing that...Harry has taken to...giving up on punctuation and...paragraphing...altogether and instead...has...started to write...everything...like this...it still won't...stop people...from...taking the piss...out of...him...for his utterly pitiful...writing...though.

Okay this pair is a match made in heaven, okay PTA fans don't put the burning cross on my lawn yet, c'mon here comes an eerie similarity...in BILLY MADISON, Sandler is chasing penguins, in MAGNOLIA the cast is chased by raining frogs! Coincidence? i think NOT! Okay pretty much i'm saying give this a chance, it could really be remarkable...Dropkick makin' like Christopher and Walkin'

I know I spelled your name wrong, but you kick ass.... I always look forward to your posts.

can we have one talkback, just one little old talkback, for me, that doesn't bring up fucking fight club? i dare you all to go a full talkback without mentioning it. don't get me wrong, i liked it too, a lot, but you guys treat it like it was citizen fucking kane. at first it was remarkable how you could tie it into a discussion about anything, then it got annoying, now it's just sad. just let go.
-
Since when do we have to like a director to acknowlegde his/her talent? Anyone who's read Easy Riders, Raging Bulls expects less. I love Magnolia and this it IS the best film PTA has ever made. More power to him for acknowledging that.
