From the set of Ben Stiller's ZOOLANDER...

Published at:  Nov 09, 2000 7:49:20 AM CST

Hey folks, Harry here and we've got the amazing Carmina Burana on the set of Ben Stiller's latest twitchy comedy... ZOOLANDER... which apparently has MATRIX-y fight scenes.... sigh...... Wachowskis... please dear lord adapt and change..... Please.... Anyway, here's that report... sounds... ummmm interesting...

Dear Harry,

Carmina Burana here...Long time listener, first time caller...and I have a
report on Ben Stiller's new flick "Zoolander" which should be coming out
this time next year. I have gleaned from what I saw this past week that the
reason it will take so long to release is that there will be many, MANY
beat-to-death "Matrix shots" all of which begin production in LA next week.
ANYWAY, on to what I was involved in.

This past week, Ben Stiller (who is directing, starring, and POSSIBLY, (I'm
not sure) writing this flick, was shooting a fashion show sequence which
will come at the end of the movie. This was all done in NYC, with NYC actors
coming in as audience members. Little did they know that one of the
black-clad fashionistas would be the crafy Carmina, trying to remember
everything to tell AICN. SO. On with the dirt.

I call it DIRT because of the location. An abandoned CHEMICAL PLANT. The
city of New York informed the production that the air quality was so poor in
there, what with the asbestos and lead percentages, that NO ONE should be
there. Especially not for 6 days of filming. Apparently Benny didn't care.
He wanted to get the shots. So when 150 NYC actors, plus the cast of
"Zoolander" all die of any number of types of cancer in the near future, you
know why. During breaks from filming, we were given surgical masks to keep
out the fumes, and every day, people quit and new extras were brought in.
(Look for gross continuity errors in that scene) Glamorous, to say the
least.

The plot? From what I could tell, the film is about a male model named
Derrick Zoolander, (Stiller) who rises to the top of the fashion world
despite the fact that he's terrible. I think Stiller did a short of this for
an awards show a couple years ago on MTV or VH1. He saves the big fashion
show at the end by defeating the evil fashion designer and former 80's new
wave star, played by Will Farrell of SNL. Stiller's girlfriend is
(surprise!!!) played by Stiller's new wife, Christine Taylor, who most
people remember as Marcia from the Brady Bunch movie. Farrell's evil female
compatriot is played by Milla Jovovich, who not only is gorgeous, but was
the only even slightly nice person on the set. I know Owen Wilson is in the
film as well, but he was not there when I was. (his stunt double is very
nice, though.) There will be many cameos by supermodels. That's pretty much
it. It didn't seem to be funny in the least, although they were trying to
be. Oy.

There were a lot of body doubles and stand-ins on hand, and I believe this
goes back to the Matrix shots. They walked through the fights and will CGI
them in LA. With "Charlie's Angels" already making these fights funny, I
feel by the time "Zoolander" comes out, they'll be seriously beating a dead
horse. But then again, that could just be the asbestos poisoning.

Till next time, I remain,

Carmina Burana (cough, cough, wheeze)

  • Seriously, this is already sounding really really bad. Stiller should stick to working with Farrely's or De Niro.

Ok, I realize i misused the apostraphe when I wrote 'Farrely's' in my previous post. I feel stupid, because I always shake my head when I read other posts that do it or write something like 'Harry your wrong, their are 3 wookies in the movie, not two'. I guess I'm human.

Before we go any further, I would like to admit that yes I saw the movie "Its Pat" and good god, I still have nightmares.. Anyhow. Good report Carmina, but why oh why by the good grace of fucking god would the location manager scout an old chemical plant that STILL had that crap in the air? This must be an American thing..

you may be even more upset to know you've spelled apostrophe wrong ... twice! heh heh. anyway, when i first heard about this movie, i thought it sounded funny, but the matrix copycat stuff's getting out of control. why, oh, why must movies always beat a dead horse ... then beat it again and again?

WILL THIS MOVIE SUCK OR NOT???

    by quizkiddonnie

Well, it doesn't look that great right now in sneak peek stage. The scenes and discussion I've caught on tv are just montages of goofs though. And Ben rocks when it comes to what comes out of his mouth and presumably his pen. Let's review Ben's killer pedigree: never mind the late, great tv show, and agree that Reality Bites was at least okay, I thought it was good and I know lots of girls who loved it. Where Ben S. blew me away was the CABLE GUY, which is the most nuanced, chock-full-of-good-stuff movie ever, holy shit I love that movie. Probably hard to get back in the director's chair after the beating he took on it. ANd then there's his performances as an actor which are so great, particularly in TSAMary, KTFaith and most especially Mysterymen, where I can't stop laughing at his ass. SO i hope this movie is killa! You can't go wrong with Will Farrell. And the idea of a male supermodel played for laffs does appeal to me. Good luck Ben! Also, IT'S PAT earns some redeeming qualities after repeated stoned viewing on cable -- it gets better with time -- and is saved in the pinch by Harold Ramis with a dash of WEEN.

Ben should have stopped directing and writing after the underrated classic "The Cable", which should have been his sole movie as an auter. Its all going to go down hill for him as a director now.

    WILL FARREL FOR PRESIDENT!

    by bashali

The guy has made at least one ass-suckin' movie (Night at the Roxbury), but the movies he is in are almost always saved by his presence. I can't even LOOK at him without laughing, he's the funniest person. SOMEONE GIVE THIS MAN A STAR COMEDY VEHICLE NOW! And not that horrendous SNL skit-turned-movie drivel! Save those scripts for toilet training your puppy

    Will Farrell's star vehicle

    by jonquixote

I've heard (maybe on this site)that Will Farrell sold to Disney and will star in a comedy about a 70's superpimp type cop who falls into a coma, and is awakened in the present day and teams up with the daughter of his old partner. Think Austin Powers meets Hard to Kill. The moral of the story: Be careful what you wish for!

    on the set of Zoolander.

    by ragsnomore

Well I was on the set yesterday, I was part of the crew. The location is not An abandoned and I am not sure if it was a chemical plant or not. But the location has been used for years as a set, Dozens even hundreds of films and TV shows and Music videos have been shot in this location. And I should know I have filmed in this location before. But it is true that lots of the crew complained about the location, every department had an independent tester come in, I guess they said it was okay or else the crew would have not stepped int that location. I don't know if the movie is going to be funny or not. Its hard to tell at this point but some of my friends working on the movie tell me that thier are some very funny lines in the film and they keep Quoting them so that is a good sign.

    Stiller is way overrated

    by pogo on my own

This guy is seriously not that Funny. He is usually best with comeos and skits. I would admit I liked the flick he did with Ed Norton, but i think that Ed was the better half of the duo. Stiller really is only as funny as the people he works with. Meet the parents was decent but I really got tired of his schtick.

    My funniest Stiller moment ever...

    by dlhstar

...was on his old Fox show in which he met James Doohan from Star Trek. Just the sheer giddiness of it was fun, while the flustered James at the end is attempting to explain the difference between Warp and Impulse.
