More on McTiernan and T3!!!
Well, I've been pulling in confirmations on TERMINATOR 3 and John McTiernan... and it looks like not only is he in talks, but is seriously considering shooting in Montreal, which is where he is currently filming ROLLERBALL v2. Ya know.... the script sucks... and McTiernan has proven in the past that he can't turn a bad script into gold at the box office.... just look back at LAST ACTION HERO and MEDICINE MAN. And as for Arnold... just watch his box office power with such bad scripts as ERASER and JINGLE ALL THE WAY.... and then observe the upcoming performance of THE SIXTH DAY... now should he pursue yet another dreadful script to screen? Personally I believe they should both move away from this project... and say team up on... ohhhhh, hmmmmmm, how about WITH WINGS AS EAGLES? Um, that's like a billion times better. Just thinking out loud here.... Interesting developments on what was unconfirmed yesterday...

Kill this now. No Linda Hamilton...If this has to go ahead without her, then it should be set in the future war. By the way I think you Yanks should vote in Mark Hamill as President!!!!1
-
Did he not direct that pile of Shite Eaters of the dead, I mean 13th warrior. He has not done anything worth mentioning since friggin Die Hard in my opinion, but hey you never now. I think this looks bad for the Terminator series though. Wind is outta here-------------->
-
Mysterio reviewed the T3 script about a month ago and liked it quite a lot. Am I the only one who remembers this? Harry seems to have forgotten.
-
Well, that sucks. These people should let the Terminator rest in peace, don't you think? Arnie should make "Crusades" and McTiernan should direct....whatever, but not a remake. "Thomas Crown" was a bit disapointing to me. But let's face it, it could be worse : our man could make a film from a Michael Crichton novel!!!!!!! My advice, John, forget about T3.
-
prequel+McTiernan = masterpiece :-)
-
One of the main criticisms of T2 is that it had no heart and soul. Although I liked T2 it was afilm more about it's technology then theplight of humanity...OK fifth element wasn't that hot but Luc Besson hit an exceelent fine line between humanity and violence in Leon the professional and that's what T3 needs to be a good decent movie!
-
...and I'll wake up soon and realize that a Cameron-less T3 with a shitty script was just some horrid nightmare I was having. Then I'll roll over, go back to sleep, and dream of studio suits that have common sense. Well, we can dream, can't we? McFly<--

I have to admit that with no Hamilton or Cameron T3 does sound a bit dodgy. However, Mctiernan is an accomplised action director and given the right script (Like the first Die Hard) he could do a good job. As for the film itself?
it would have to be set in the future with John Conner now leading the resistance with Arnie his second in command. You would probably have to do a scene with John visiting his Mothers grave or something to accomodate the absence of Linda Hamilton (Please don't re-cast her!). Considering that this film would wrap up the trilogy, the suites in Hollywood will want Arnie to save the day and end the war at the end of the film, but hey, I have a great idea, at the end of T3 we lose the war and Skynet win, we become drones for them & then they dominant the planet, then in years to come a saviour arrives and saves mankind, sound familiar? the Matrix could well be called Terminator4 with Matrix 2&3 being T5 & T6. All you have to do in the Matrix films is have a couple of robots in them and refer to the machines as 'skynet' and hey, you have a completely original six part Terminator series. Also, the Hugo Weaving character in Matrix could well be a more advanced model of Robert Patrick's Terminator in T2! This kicks ass - prove me wrong. -

Please do 'Hulk' John ! I liked 'Last Action Hero' even though there were some serious black-holes in the script, but 'Hulk' needs that kind of Look. You Semler and Zanetti- ahhhh....

He have proven that three times with Die Hard (possibly one of the best ever), Predator (Kicked ASS!) and Hunt For Red October (Great Suspence action Thriller).
It all have to do with the script now, which unfortunately looks very similar to T2.
I'm sure the movie will have some kick ass action though. -
This is not meant to sound sexist, but this whole female Terminator thing is a gimpy gimmick. Patrick's molten metal terminator was a logical technological step; it made sense within the arc of the story. I don't need to read the damned script to know exactly how this movie is going to play out. It'll feel like an also ran in the series.
-
Okay, let's set the record straight: BLAIR WITCH 2 was good! Very smart... those who didn't think so obviously didn't get it. ERASER wasn't that terrible. 13TH WARRIOR was actually pretty good (there are plenty of worse movies out there). And to the person who said Luc Besson should direct it: I know he did a great job with THE PROFESSIONAL and an okay one with THE FIFTH ELEMENT, but come on, did anyone see THE MESSENGER? It sucked so much.

I caught T2 last night on WGN and it was the WORST editing for tv ever!!!! Anywhoo, I was thinking that since Linda Hamilton declined T3, why not get her twin sister? Thoughts?

What is the deal here? NO, you cannot make a Terminator film WITHOUT Linda Hamilton (IE Sarah fucking Conner) or James Cameron. I mean this isnt something thats left to be discussed. ITS over... NO damn way! Why the hell are we talking about this like its a good idea??? What the hell is wrong with some of you!??

He's a thriller director. His best films - Predator, Die Hard 1, and Red October - were all suspense thrillers with bits of action. Straight-up action flicks require a bit more flair and different approach, which McTiernan doesn't quite have (unlike Cameron and Woo, who have those skills in spades yet lack in other areas). Just look at Last Action Hero and Die Hard 3. Not boring exactly, but the action was not exciting at all. What was the best part of Die Hard 3? Not the mega-budget action scenes (which were lame), but the small and hyper suspenseful elevator scene! I don't mean to rag on the man. Predator, DH, and Red are three true and enduring classics, but he's just not the best action guy.

by kyle.reese
How many T3 scripts are there? Someone tell me because I've read one of them and am worried that this is what will be the actual film. This T3 was about Sarah and John hiding away secretly like criminals. There was a female Terminator who can change into electricity and travel through powerlines. There was also a Arnie model in there too (who joins the Connors). The story includes some guy named Ferguson who's dad was a cop who was killed in the original Terminator's police raid. This script was sooooo crap I just cannot describe the shiteness of it. I mean Skynet had it's own personality and spoke like a comic villain, and the ending was pathetic - a mess of time travel that results in an alternate reality where Reese and Sarah are married with John as their son.
-
I mean, Arnie was AWESOME in those days man...If T3 can just recapture a bit of the hardcore nature of those films, and for gods sake stop trying to make Arnie a "caring new man" or some shit....he's a fucking badass, and thats what he'll always be...give him a big gun, make it violent, and have lots of those exoskeletons walking around...
I'll be satisfied, even if I won't be happy about it tainting what is an essentially perfect first 2 Terminator films. -
I don't know why some of you people are talking shit about McTiernan. He is a god amongst action directors and he made two great Schwarzenegger films with PREDATOR and LAST ACTION HERO. John would only complement James Camerons work from the other two TERMINATOR films. John (like Cameron) is a master of action films...hell, he invented DIE HARD. He will do justice to T3 and the script that was reported a month ago, it KICKED ASS so I don't know why you people can't wait to see how T3 turns out before you call it shit. Wait for a film first movie morons. Harry was right when he said McTiernan should direct Arnold in the long delayed WWII action/drama WITH WINGS AS EAGLES. That film is a masterpiece waiting to happen. Lets hope McTiernan gets the directing duties on both T3 and WITH WINGS AS EAGLES.
-
I can't wait for the flames to start on this one but as you all get yourselves into a frothing little tirade, I'll be out amongst people, having a beer and enjoying friendships instead of crying myself to sleep because Cameron has pulled out of T3. If I may put in MY two cents, I can't POSSIBLY judge T3 because as of now, it is nothing more then words on paper. As for Camerons involvement, good, glad to see him go. Don't get me wrong, I enjoy his work, he makes some of the best damn popcorn flicks I have ever seen. It would be nice if he could pick an original story instead of riding someone else's ideas to make his money so he can go on geek adventures (see the actual Titanic, go to Mir).
Lets see, chronologically? Piranha 2? Should I bother? But, it was a break for him to direct a SEQUEL.
Terminator? GREAT low budget rip-off of Harlan Ellison's story.
Aliens? Possibly one of the best SEQUELS, in my mind, ever made. But, a completely LOGICAL continuation from the first GROUND BREAKING ORIGINAL.
The Abyss? Come on people, this is a good movie, no doubt but CHRIST! how many of us have thought of this basic premise whilst watching episodes of "In Search Of"?
Terminator 2? A very cool movie but simply a SEQUEL to a movie that he made by LIFTING someone elses story.
True Lies? Some of the damn coolest action sequences ever BASED on someone else's movie.
Titanic? Except for the cookie cutter love story, it was everything that I had ever read or watched about that tragic night.
The truth about Cameron to me, and let me preface this with, I AM a fan and will continue to go see his movies, but the man is a hack. A very well polished hack, but none the less, a hack who can't seem to write a an original story. Christ, he had to be SUED to have Harlan Ellisons name put back onto "The Terminator". I know, I know, he is a DIRECTOR, he puts a vision onto someone elses words but he also builds himself as a screenwriter.
Let me say this again, I AM a fan, in fact, I think JC is one of the BEST action directors we have, no doubt. But please, don't give this guy "walks on water" syndrome. Next thing you know, he thinks he will be the king of the world... T3 NEEDS new blood, not another rehashed timetravel "kill the boy" story.
I do need to look for the script, I think it would be an interesting read but, I will save my opinion on a MOVIE THAT HASN'T EVEN BEEN MADE YET UNTIL THE DAMN THING IS DONE!!!!!
Hey all you people ready to chomp on ANYTHING before ANYTHING is actually made, here's an idea for you all to put into your pipes:
SETTING: 10 years later, the time of the war has come and gone and all is good in the world. Sarah begins to realize that the war will still happen, it HAS to happen, otherwise, John and Kyle would have never met, John would have never sent Kyle BACK in time to father himself. Sarah begins to realize that had the war been TRULY averted, HISTORY itself would have changed and she would have never had a son. The fact that she DOES have a son PROVES that the war must still take place and that Kyle must still return in time to father John.
So, Sarah sets about trying to find out WHY the war is still going to happen, only to come to the realization that it was JOHN who kept a piece of the Terminator and had submitted it anonymously to some high-tech company because he also knew that if the war was not to happen, he would never be born, a selfish act by a punk of a kid.
Craziness ensues.
Kind of John is the hero but also the start of the war kind of thing... let the flames begin.

You're not as good as the LAST movie you've done, you're as good as the BEST movie you've done. McT has made a lot of duds and a lot of great movies. He's capable of great films. How about benefit of the doubt?
-
I'm not so sure about him for the lead. Crusade needs someone with more than two expressions -- Arnie's are eye-squinting-anger and stone-face-apathy. I'm not saying the part requires Olivier, but Verhoeven + Arnie = BAD. Bad in a hammy, overblown 80s way that can be fun, but who wants to see Medievil Starship Troopers?

Why? Terminator 2 was just a pale imitation of the first one. So what radical new idea is there going to be in this one to keep the franchise fresh? I can't think of a particularly good one without forcing the concept beyond the commercial, so I can't imagine Hollywood taking any risks. Another case of Hollywood tarnishing a brilliant original film with a cash in sequel (Alien 3, Star Wars: Episode 1, the Batman sequels). What is the point, apart from merchandising revenue?
-
hey jocedeg, thanks so much for proving the point that i was trying to make, that the people on this board seem to have no tolerance for any idea other then their own and for movies that haven't even been made yet. as for my story idea, you are absolutely right, it is shit. i threw it out there (after about 15 seconds of thought) so that i could get YOUR reaction to prove a point, thanks again. i'm not in the story telling business, i have more important things to do. where's your idea by the way? what's the name of the last movie you've made? people on this board kill me more then movie critics, people who PIGGY BACK on an industry that they would LOVE to be in but have no talent themselves, other then being critical, just like you jocedog.
as for frank miller, BRILLIANT writer/artist, 'nuff said. is his word golden? must how he chooses to write a timetravel story be taken as scripture? last i checked, robocop never met the terminator, so it seems to me that he was simply writing a story, not to be confused with the movie story lines.
jim cameron walks on water? jim cameron directs BEAUTIFUL action sequences and as i said, i AM a fan. but for people to say that he is the only one who could direct a GOOD terminator flick (which in my opinion, #1 DESTROYS #2 which was just a rehash of his first story [which BTW, was RIPPED OFF from H.E.] with bigger explosions and a bigger budget) is ludicrous. are you ACTUALLY telling me that there are no other compitant directors in the biz? are you telling me that no other director can step in to a film franchise and make a better movie than the person who created the franchise? i have six words for you: Irvin Kirschner The Empire Strikes Back.
Now how about we all just wait for the movie to be done before we start criticizing it? everyone remember how SPECIAL it used to be to go see a GREAT movie without boards like this? without half assed critics or fanboys like jocedeg to ruin our experience? -
if harry thinks the script is so bad why doesn't he review the fucking thing. All we know of the script is tha mysterio said it was good.

While I admit I was disappointed by Die Hard 3, it was still 1995's #1-highest-grossing global blockbuster... and considering the mammoth difficulty of coordinating a gargantuan production of a stunt-filled action movie amidst the chaos and red-tape of NYC, the fact that the movie even got made is an amazing feat in and of itself... So I'm willing to forgive a little directorial sloppiness due to the extreme situation of its creation. McTiernan produced AND directed DHWAV, whereas on the logistically simpler Die Hard 1 he'd had Joel Silver and Larry Gordon helping him out. It's one thing to sit in the theater critiquing a few flaws and suggesting what could have been done better, but really imagine the effort that went into making a HUGE action epic almost entirely on location in America's biggest and busiest metropolis! I thought McTiernan more than proved his worthiness, and again look at the foreign box-office... this movie was embraced worldwide in spite of its R-rating.
-
He's simply the best, McTiernan and John Woo are pretty close. I don't think anyone in the world could top his first Terminator films but McTiernan could be very close - WITH ANOTHER SCRIPT.
To d8thstar. I don't think your idea did suck at all, really. But I want the last half of the movie to take place during the war. -
My idea for T3 goes like this. The whole time travel concept only works if everything is a continous loop. Which means everything happens, no one can change the future.
Now, John Connor doesn't know this. By sending back Kyle Reese in time he thinks he can alter the future. Because Sarah was told by Kyle she could change the future, she beleaves it too, and that's why we hear her talking like you can change the future in the voiceover in T2.
You remember Miles Dyson got a chip from "somewhere",they didn't know where they got it. This is the people who is going to create the revolutionary neural network processor, now when Dyson is dead, and the Future War happens starting with Judgement Day Aug 29 1997.
Remember in T2 Arnold said that Miles Dyson was the most directly responsible for the war. Well, the Arnold Terminator only knows what he have been programmed to know, by John Connor. John Connor believes Miles Dyson was the most responsible, when he infact is not.
The movie would focus on Kyle Reese, his parents are killed of when he's very young and he gets to be a soldier among people he hates. He is very anti to everything, until he meats John Connor that is. The movie would be very dark, like the first one, and ending with John Connor sending Kyle Reese back in time, making the time loop complete.
-
Harlan Ellison had absolutely nothing to do with Terminator. If I hear one more clueless fanboy who bought into Ellison's bullshit I swear to God I'll go back in time and destroy Arpanet.
Ellison is NOT credited with the story for Terminator. All his lawsuit did was get him a recognition mention in the credits to avoid further problems. He's a loudmouthed egotist who claims credit for virtually everything on earth.
The actual story of Terminator has nothing in common with Ellison's story except that both involve people in a dystopian future ending up in the past.
Ellison's story is about a soldier in WW4 fighting some variation of the Chinese and the Russians somehow ending up in the past confused and disoriented, then ending up in jail and finally lecturing people in our time about disarnament to prevent his dystopian future from coming to pass.
This has as much in common with Terminator as War and Peace has in common with Pokemon. -
'nuff said
-
to simpilfy the complix reasoning, just say Skynet is built and the nuclear holocaust occurs because it's fate. Who cares how, it just happens. The Cyberdine building being destroyed in T2 only bought time. Seriously, I love your idea about Reese being this Mad Max-style rebel who finds a cause to fight for through Connor. However I still think that John Connor shouldn't be seen, only mentioned. Because that's what I liked about the original movie. Connor is too important for us to see directly - almost like Jesus was in Ben-Hur. And lastly - NO MORE TIME TRAVELING ROBOTS!
-
Yes, I'm aware of the "I don't care" attitude among moviegoers but still James Cameron have been able to keep the movies logical. It has to be something that drives a man like that, to do things that most moviegoers not even will notice.
I agree that we shouldn't see John Connor much, he is a "great military leader" and I don't think he would have time to be with Kyle very much. But he still needs to be in the movie, because that photograph of Sarah was given to him by John Connor, and I don't think John would give it to him if he didn't know him. -
first off, jocedog, no offense, flames can be kinda fun, i didn't take it personally, hope you didn't either...
to andreasingo, thanks for the compliment. again, that idea popped in my head in like 15 seconds. i agree with you, the second half of my story idea would take place during the war, that's my "craziness ensues" tag...
next... o.deus, i'm not a fan-boy of H.E., far from it, but let's break down your story synopsis shall we?
Ellison's story is about a soldier in WW4 (Reese in the war) fighting some variation of the Chinese and the Russians somehow ending up in the past (where Reese goes) confused and disoriented (like Reese, "what YEEEEAR?"), then ending up in jail (Reese, damn close to ending up in jail) and finally lecturing people (Sarah) in our time about disarnament (bring down Skynet) to prevent his dystopian future from coming to pass (hey, looky there, JUST like Reese).
H.E. had nothing to do with terminator, DIRECTLY. INdirectly, if you can't see how JC drew the inspiration from H.E.'s story, then you need to jump off the JC bandwagon.
the points i was trying to get at:
1) a GOOD sequel can be made without the involvement of the people who made the first.
2) how about we all wait until we actually see a film before we start raking it over the coals?
3) JC is not all that he's cracked up to be. and AGAIN, i say this as A FAN, the man can direct BRILLIANT action sequences, when it comes to story and character development....
-
it does have logic behind it. Cyberdine systems still develops the technology, it just takes a few more years. Human ambiton makes the nuclear holocaust still occur. In the T2: BATTLE ACROSS TIME show at Universal Studies, Sarah Connor says this, that they weren't able to stop fate. From an non-fan audience stand-point it would be boring and confusing to explain step-by-step how we've twisted out of T2's happy ending. If it is really bothering fans of the series then make it a PREQUEL. Reese's alternate future. But I just feel that the circularity of the original was what made it superior to the sequel. It would be nice if the Terminator movies was a full circle... And about Connor giving Reese the picture without revealing himself. There's many creative ways to show this. I can't think of any now but I'm sure there is. Maybe Connor could be in disguise and Reese doesn't know it's him until the end... No, that's waaay too much like Padme/Amidala in The Phantom Menace.
-
Yes, we probably could get away with a logical ending without explaining all the stuff, I also beleave that something can be done logical AND entertaining.
The Connor giving Reese the photo of Sarah could maybe be maybe like this. Connor accidently comes into Johns room and walking around there he see Sarah's photograph on the wall and he gets obsessed with it and comes back later and steals it!
