*ahem* This trailer for A MONSTER CALLS has narration from Liam Neeson’s monster, who we don’t see, and only reveals his monstrous nature towards the end.
ORPHANAGE director J.A. Bayona’s first real children’s film seems to have a strong visual style, and many of these shots (particular the POV from inside a pencil sharpener) are kinda awesome. I don’t know if I expected the titular monster to be quite so big and Ent-looking, but hey, Neeson’s huge himself, isn’t he?
I don’t know if this is the kind of thing that calls out to kids worldwide and says “YOU MUST SEE THIS,” but I’m certainly interested. This seems to be going for what films like WHERE THE WILD THINGS ARE have struggled to be, a darker, sadder children’s film than what we’re used to. Based on what we’re seeing, whatever it is will at least look great, which is a start.
