Edgar Wright's working on an animated film about shadows!

Edgar Wright’s got BABY DRIVER up next, he’s got the adaptation of FORTUNATELY, THE MILK with Johnny Depp cookin’, and showing no signs of slouching, he’s now got an animated film lined up.

He’ll be directing and co-writing (with TV personality David Walliams) the project for Dreamworks Animation, who scuttled another shadow-centric production called ME AND MY SHADOW back in 2013.

Wright’s incorporated animation into his work, perhaps most significantly in SCOTT PILGRIM VS. THE WORLD, but has never done anything quite this size in the medium up ’til this point. My hope is his visual, kinetic style will transition nicely over to animation, where he can do essentially whatever his imagination can conjure up. Shadows being central to whatever story they’re working on allows him to get moody and dark, perhaps akin to Tim Burton’s animated features (more likely similar to something like RISE OF THE GUARDIANS). Either way, this is worth getting excited about, and hopefully, he, like Burton, Zack Snyder, and Wes Anderson, will be able to use the medium to flex his creative muscles in a new, exciting way.
