And with that, we're off to the races. Fox officially announced that the sequel to PROMETHEUS is now ALIEN: COVENANT, due to be released October 6, 2017. Ridley Scott returns to the director's chair to tell this story, and while I'm not overly fond of PROMETHEUS, the idea of Scott returning to a movie that directly references ALIEN in the title is exciting to me. Plus, we have a synopsis, and looking at the new story, one has to wonder what happened to Noomi Rapace's Shaw:
Ridley Scott returns to the universe he created in ALIEN with ALIEN: COVENANT, the second chapter in a prequel trilogy that began with PROMETHEUS -- and connects directly to Scott’s 1979 seminal work of science fiction. Bound for a remote planet on the far side of the galaxy, the crew of the colony ship Covenant discovers what they think is an uncharted paradise, but is actually a dark, dangerous world -- whose sole inhabitant is the "synthetic" David (Michael Fassbender), survivor of the doomed Prometheus expedition.
So we'll definitely be seeing David again, but what of Shaw? What of the ship that she and David took control of at the end of PROMETHEUS? What of the proto-alien in Prometheus's survival pod? Will we get answers, or more questions? Since it looks like we're jumping several centuries ahead (there are certainly no colonized worlds in PROMETHEUS) will we hear more about Wayland-Yutani, or even the Nostromo? Will we see a more traditional-looking alien? I didn't anticipate Scott leaping this far ahead with his story - I thought this would be a more direct continuation of the PROMETHEUS timeline, but that looks like it may not be the case.
In any event, if this is further down the timeline than we thought, that may well be the reason Neill Blomkamp's ALIEN sequel was put on hold. I'm excited to learn more, and I want Ridley Scott to finish what he started. We'll know more in the months ahead.
