X-FILES Season Premiere Talk Back!!

Published at:  Nov 06, 2000 1:35:52 AM CST

Hey, everyone. "Moriarty" here with some Rumblings From The Lab.

Wow. Hats off to Chris Carter and Kim Manners for bringing the show roaring back to life as the new season gets underway. I thought the use of the supporting characters was solid, the introduction of Robert Patrick was confident, and the shift for Scully from co-star to center in a welcome fit. I hope the energy of tonight's episode is what we have in store for the season ahead. Harry and I spoke with Carter at the EXORCIST premiere in Westwood recently, and it was interesting to hear him talk about falling back in love with the show. I know I'm onboard for whatever's ahead. How about you guys? Did you love it or hate it tonight? The truth, I'm sure, is below...

From the beginning, a fan. The last two seasons have seemed primarily silly, and without the depths captured at the start. Finally, with the eminent parting of D.D. there seems to be a spark of something fresh. I am eagerly awaiting this season.

At several things. It seems a sad state of affairs when there are only THREE talkbacks on the night of an X-Files season premiere. I can understand people getting sick of the constant waiting, I mean, most shows had their season premieres weeks ago. But I agree that I am also falling back in ove with the show, if this episode is any indication. Think of it! A whole mythology season! One can only hope. I liked the fact that the file slipped to Agent Doggett was #1013-113. Always lots of nice touches. Good call having Kim Manners direct also. I look forward to a great season. Hopefully, they will kepp the hokum to a minimum.

    a promising start

    by jameskilbirnie

Already the show seems to be kicking in the right gear, and Robert Patrick looks to make a fine "replacement" for Duchovny. I'm looking forward to the dark, old-fashioned episodes that rely on a creepy story and can stand alone from the main ongoing alien plot. I believe this will be the true test for the show's survival. Also, the music was pretty good in this episode and helped intensify Scully's frustrations. This has the chances to be a great season, although it will be sad to see Duchovny go. As long as he's there for the next movie...

    Mulder is an alien

    by sreedy

Ok, that little chess-playin kid, he's half alien, and he uses more of his brain to read peoples thoughts. A while ago, Mulder's brain went nuts, possibly growing in capacity to make him psycic like the kid. This implies that Mulder is half alien (hey, it could work, his dad was into the whole alien project thing). How cool would that be if after 8 years of Fox looking for aliens, he finds out he is one.

    by psyclops

I used to love this show, but lost interest soon after the movie was released in '97. Since then, I've missed a majority of the last two years including the season finale! Someone help me out here: 1) How did Scully become pregnant? 2) What the hell happened to Agent Mulder in the finale? 3) What's this I hear about Mulder's irregular brain activity and previous hospital admittance? Hopefully, someone can answer my questions! Oh, by the way! I met David Duchovney right near my house! He was filming his latest movie EVOLUTION at the Hawthorne Plaza Mall, a place that's been abandoned and shut down for about two years now. They've been shooting the movie for the past six days according to security and I got a brief glimpse at Julianne Moore and director Ivan Reitman.

Much as I would have loved Bruce Campbell joining the X-Files I have renewed interest in the show now with Robert Patrick co-starring. As long as they can keep away from the silliness and get back to the darker shows of the first few seasons, I'm there watching every Sunday for this new and vastly improved season.

Thougth the episode was great, lookin forward to the rest of the season. Only a few things I didn't care for. (1) The image of Mulder "falling away" in the credits... HOKEY... (2) Why did they deliver Mulder's headstone to the FBI and then later on park it right in front of Scully's desk??? (3) Does the FBI not have color copiers? They Xeroxed the photo of Gibson Praise and it looked terrible (as did slightly-older Gibson now...eesh)

LOVED the scene where Scully and Doggett first meet... and Doggett ends up a tad wetter than when he entered.

ok...I've never been a rabid X-phile, and the show had really started to lose its edge. Thought i'd tune it see a few mins and decide it was still the now boring hulk that refused to die. I was impressed, i thought it worked, I'll be watching in the future. Nice to have some life back in the show....now if they can tie in a few more of the unanswered questions from the past that would make it a really great season.......

Last night's ep was a really good one, although it's been so long since we have seen the alien bounty hunter, and now he shows up at the end holding the kid's hand ... wasn't the BH on the other side or something. Kinda confused, I hope the next ep clears that up. Also, I was very happy that Gibson is back, I can't tell you how frustrated I have been the last few years wondering the hell if that loose end would ever be wrapped up. But what happened to that alien in the power plant? Did that evolve into the girl that watched Gibson taken into the principal's office? All in all a good ep.

    A Solid first episode

    by abner ravenwood

This first episode showed some promise. Although it was a little dry, it seems to be the integral fondation/set-up for cool things to come. Robert Patrick is a solid actor who brings cool things. As I've mentioned previously, the show got off track when it lost some of the idealism from the first four seasons -- there were always two thematic undercurrents: The Truth is Out There and Trust No One. When the former got shafted for the latter, the show turned kind of stale and got muddled and confusing. At the beginning, it was JFK meets Close Encounters, which was cool because it was the government that was evil and the extraterrestrial presence was a mystery -- I always thought of the aliens as enlightened beings with a deeper purpose and it was the power hungry cabal within the government that was keeping them from us. Mulder was the idealistic zealot in a dark world. Now, we're dealing with a body snatchers/evil alien invasion kind of plot line that doesn't seem true to the spirit of the first several seasons. I just wish it would get back to treating the extraterrestrials with a sense of awe and wonder -- not that the fear shouldn't be there as well, but I just wish fear wasn't the only flavor. I'd like to see lots of different possibilities. It's a big universe after all, right? I thought this first show of the new season was good and solid, but I am waiting to see where they take it. Here's hoping they expand on things....

Is there a connection...you tell me. When the show moved to L.A. the quality started to slip. Anyway, were those torture scenes of Mulder's punishment for dissing the show last season? :) I liked the episode and unlike some fair-weather fans I stick with the show year after year. Sure there are some clunkers but what series doesn't have their share? But when the show gets it right there's no other genre series that can come close.

    Season Premier

    by snafu

Well, I gotta tell you, no one was more skeptical than I was about Duchovny leaving the show and someone replacing him, and I'll tell you what, I'm still skeptical, but this episode did a lot toward disproving my fears. I've only really seen Robert Patrick in T2 which, while a good flick, was not a role for Patrick to flex any acting muscle, but he did ok in this opener and Scully's character seems to be doing pretty well too, despite the wear and tear of several seasons. I still think that the show has no real potential if Mulder drops out all together, I mean, lets face it, the driving force of the show was really his quest and his character. I have no delusions that this season will resolve what happened to Mulder, in fact, I'm certain that if they continue the series much longer, this event will join the rest of the quest of things that will never be solved and I really hope that they can wrap up the series, grab Duchovny for a movie or two and finish in style. The other future looks bland, a 90210 style 10 year run where two or three of the original actors remain in place and it no longer resembles anything of the original. Here's hoping Carter has some kind of good strategy...

    No Mulder = No Interest

    by helos

Let's think for a second about what the purpose and focus of the X-files is......Mulder's search for his sister. Not alien conspiracies, not a partner's faith, not wierd monsters.....it's about Mulder trying to find out what happened to his sister. Everything stems from that moment; the moment when Mulder stood helpless and watched a person he loved being taken away from him. Wacky creatures, smoking government agents, and a partner's personal problems have all been obstacles in the pursuit of his sister. It's as pivotal a moment for Mulder's life as Bruce Wayne watching his parents die.....it defines the character and the storyline. This isn't an ensomble show. It's about one man and how his search for truth affects him and everyone around him. Without Mulder, it's just a thirty-something Freakylinks.

Show some guts Chris Carter; end the show THIS season. Don't allow it die a slow, agonizing, low-Neilson death. Go out on top. Go out with a bang.

    Guess who "Mulder" really is!

    by tbrosz

The "Mulder" at the end of the episode is obviously the Amazing Shape Changing Alien seen in about a million other episodes. What will really be amazing is that after all this time I bet Scully will NOT figure out (for the millionth time) that this is the Amazing Shape Changing Alien! (Scully: "Gosh, Mulder, is it really you?" Mulder: "Ack! Ack! Ack!" Scully: "Hmmmm...Mulder's acting strange! I wonder what's wrong with him?" etc. etc.) This is getting as old as Boris Badenov's disguises on Rocky and Bullwinkle. The characters on this show have the slowest learning curve since David Vincent.

    2 word review: shit-files

    by glucas

No, the season opener was ok, but this better be the last season. The whole alien abduction/conspiracy storyline is so old, it makes me ill. We should subject Chris Carter to that mouth-drill and sternum-cutter torture for putting us through this crap. Here's how it's going to be, Carter: Have one of the werewolves from the first X-File case (as seen in the first season's "Shapes") kill Kersh in a violently gruesome manner, make John Doggett recover from his amnesia and remember that he's made of liquid metal, sent back in time to kill John Conner, allow Scully and Marita Covarrubias to explore the undiscovered love they have for each other--"with sexy results" (said in Homer Simpson voice), return Mulder to Krychek's apartment, where he can shoot the ratboy as he's spanking the monkey--with his only hand--in his bathroom, then END THE SHOW. And start airing The Lone Gunman already! We're waiting...

...and have Skinner remember that he's really Horace Pinker, the killer from Shocker. Then you can skip the werewolf angle and have Skinner/Pinker kill Kersh. Think about it...he flies out of the outlet behind Kersh's desk while Kersh is downloading XXX-files from the "Evidence Server" and guts him with a rusty spoon!

A breath of fresh air named Robert Patrick.

    by superninja

They should've done this two seasons ago. Now, I love Mulder, but he is played out -- BIG TIME. Thankfully, Duchovny knows this and is backing away from the franchise. Tonight's EP was fantastic, one of the best of the last two years, I'd say. Anderson got to do some great acting, Skinner was given some nice depth, and his scenes with the Lone Gunmen are excellent! This is a guy that wants to do right but is sooooo in over his head and it's going to be fun to watch, like Mulder was in the 2nd year -- naive and full of optimism. Scully is the strongest character on the show, and thank God she is no longer a "non-believer". Kirsh is still a huge asshole, which works for me. I'm so happy with this! I really thought with Mulder out I would be having a fit, but I like it better without him, heavens to betsy!

It's called evolution -- get over it.

    by superninja

The show is not the same show it was in the first 2 seasons, and it never will be again, because how boring would it be to see Mulder act like he did when the show began? The characters evolved, people. As you can see by watching last night's EP, they are going in a new direction with the show. I thought it had a slicker feel than previous episodes, and boy do I like this Doggett guy. I hope they don't screw him up, but how many times have we seen a character on the show that doesn't have some kind of journey or ulterior motive, but is just TRYING TO DO THEIR JOB? This is a unique character to the X-Files. Maybe he'll get into a moral dilemma down the line, but I like him so far.

    by the pharaoh

The bg music last night was a ok at the beginning of the episode, but after a while it got a little to be a too much. I mean all those scenes with just close ups of Scully's face, her pondering stuff. Would be haunting music, that doesn't fit the show blaring. What's up with that?

Is Mulder going to die off?!

    by tom veil

First, last night's premiere was really great. I lost interest in the show last season, but I am sure to watch every episode as long as the show is able to spur my interest by delving deeper into the characters that made the show great. I thought the new character did a great job, and I am interested to see what oppinions he adopts in the next few weeks, and what his greater role in the X-files will be.

Now, what's this about Mulder DYING?! It is a good story point, it makes sense, and I buy it, but I can't help but thinking this has more to do with the personal and legal problems between Ducovany, Carter and FOX last year, than Carter's original vision for the show... But it is HIS show, and he has the right to go wherever he pleases with it, even if it means killing off Mulder. I hope that does not happen.

I read an interview with Ducovany a couple seasons ago where he said he looked forward to portraying Mulder as he grows older. I became very excited in that prospect. That interview was after the X-files movie. At that time, Carter was still planning to phase out the TV show in two seasons and start producing more X-files movies (in the same vein as the Star Trek franchise). I would hate to see Mulder go, but if this is what they need to revive the show from the apathy and lack luster of last season, then more power to them.

I'll watch the show as long as it has the elements that interested me in the first place... strong and believable characters, a thoughtful and intelligent script, artful cinematography, and first class acting.

    Too Slow

    by quiddity

Only criticism of last night's episode was that it didn't move along well enough. A bit on the sleepy passive side. As for DUCHOVNY: I imagine he will probably live long enough to do another Xfiles movie, maybe two. As for SCULLY: I think Gillian likes the increased screen time resulting from Mulder's absensce. As for DOGGET(sp?): I like that they brought him in as a normal agent. She has become the "spooky" one due to her involvement for so many years. Now she needs a counterpart who can say the equivalent of "Mulder, is this one of your chupacabras?" with a note of sarcasm.

    A WHOLE MYTHOLOGY SEASON???

    by theta

Christ, end it at season seven!
The mythology has ALWAYS been the stupidest part of XF. The funny episodes (Jose Chung is an SF TV classic) and the one-off episodes more than made up for it.
You see, unlike the rest of the show, the mythology has no credibility. The conspiracy is A) ridiculously byzantine, B) utterly illogical to anyone with even minor experience in government (a slow invasion by aliens? Please, these people can't even cover up their personal lives), and C) a great way to keep new people from watching the show.
Point of interest: XF exploded with season four, which had a lot of good stuff. Interest was strong in five, began to wane in six, and then the ratings dropped 26 percent by season seven. Why?
Because the mythology was too complex and too annoying. I can tell you all about it...but who wants to turn on the TV with a syllabus?
If CC's smart, he'll keep the mythology to the beginning and end, and crank out the best one-offs and humorous episodes the show's ever had.

    Scully's Sex Appeal?

    by senorjerms

It seems to me that X-files has spent seven years developing Scully as a strong female in a male-dominated series characterized by its many subplots devoted to fertility. This being said, I'd like to ask if anybody else noticed that last night's episode relied too heavily on sexual imagery? Honestly, one of the first scenes of Scully was a shameless boob-shot, followed by a longer montage of T&A. This was interrupted only by a scene displaying the Agent's morning sickness (which in itself is a rather feminine phenomenon) after which a slow shot of from the ankles up presented the character in full for the first time. Later in the episode, we see her illuminated romantically while at her computer beside some rather oddly juxtaposed roses. I would hope that Carter & Co. have spent enough time actually creating a validly 3-dimensional personality so that they realize the trivialization of intellect that occurs with this shamelessly callous representation. If this is intended to highlight Scully's sexuality and femininity, it would seem prudent to do so in a more careful fashion. Thoughts?

    it's so obvious

    by reely now

Yes, everyone knows "Mulder" is really the Bounty Hunter. Why don't Scully or Skinner? For goodness sakes: they *know* Mulder was abducted, so anyone who looks like him can't *be* him. It's the oldest trick up Carter's sleeve. I think the girl from the school was the BH. I haven't re-watched it since Sunday, but something about her smile, and the way she was so random, and the way Gibson was obviously reading "her" mind with growing panic. And if "Mulder" was really Mulder, Gibson wouldn't be trying to get away. he should be running away from Scully, whose last words to him, I belive, were something like "Don't worry. You're safe with me." As for Mulder dying, the tomb stone, the car rental, etc. ... so obviously faked by Doggett, who lied to Scully the moment she met him. How can she believe anything he says or shows her? Thumbs down on the season premiere. I agree: Bring on the Lone Gunmen spin off and some funny episodes (with the Fish-feeding Doggett).
