Noomi Rapace as Amy Winehouse? Sounds pretty good!

I feel like I’ve been singing Noomi Rapace’s praises a lot recently.

Over the past week and a half, she’s signed onto the Michael Mann ENZO FERRARI flick, and her breakout role of Lisbeth Salander was possibly being taken over by Alicia Vikander. Both stories were excuses for me to talk about her mature presence, earthy beauty, and sad, expressive eyes. Perfectly enough, all those qualities should come in handy for the project she was just announced for: a biopic of Amy Winehouse.

Rapace is in talks to star as the late singer in a film called, sure enough, AMY WINEHOUSE, for AUGUST RUSH director (and writer of father Jim Sheridan’s IN AMERICA), Kristen Sheridan. No word on what aspect(s) of her life the film will focus on, but it will no doubt culminate in her late-2000s superstardom which led her to worldwide fame and three Grammy wins (including Song of the Year for “Rehab,” seen below).

Over four years after her death and Winehouse (who died tragically from alcohol poisoning) is still as relevant as ever; the documentary about her life, AMY, was a big success and got a lot of people expressing their love for the fallen artist, and her records continue to sell and get play. She was, like Janis Joplin, the rare songstress superstar with rock-solid street cred, and a movie about her life should have the four-quadrant appeal that STEVE JOBS so desperately wanted and failed to secure.

As for Rapace, well, there’s no doubt in my mind that she can handle the darker, self-destructive side of Winehouse’s personality. The question is whether she can belt out the tunes or hold down the stage (pun intended) the way the multi-platinum performer could. I have no doubt she’ll meet the challenge with aplomb, and rock us out while breaking our hearts as the iconic singer who passed away at the young age of 27.

Can Rapace do Winehouse, or do you got someone else in mind?
