Shane Carruth's previous films, PRIMER and UPSTREAM COLOR, are rich, complicated films, but they aren't for everyone. They require a bit of work from their audience, and while I consider them brilliant science fiction works, there is very little that you would call mainstream. Carruth's next film, THE MODERN OCEAN, seems to buck that trend, as Hollywood Reporter says that Carruth has gathered some well-known actors and actresses to be in the new adventure.
Keanu Reeves, Daniel Radcliffe, Chloe Grace Moretz, Jeff Goldblum, Asa Butterfield, and Anne Hathaway have joined the cast, along with Carruth. Plot details are being held close (par for the course with Carruth), but the script is supposedly 200 pages long, dealing with revenge, high seas battles, and intrigue. As detail-oriented as Carruth is, I'd bet that THE MODERN OCEAN has quite a story to tell. I'm happy that Carruth isn't taking anoher 9 years to make a feature-length film - although shooting hasn't started yet. But his script has gathered the interests of some pretty terrific actors, so I'm excited to see what THE MODERN OCEAN is.
And if you haven't seen PRIMER or UPSTREAM COLOR, you should, but be prepared for some heavy lifting. Carruth movies aren't for lightweights.
