@’s by TRICK ‘R TREAT’s Marc Andreyko!!!
THE KID MARVEL (TKM): Best question to always start with, for those who don’t know who you are, tell us a little about yourself as well as your role in TRICK ‘R TREAT?
MARC ANDREYKO (MA): I'm a writer of comic books, TV, and film for over 20 years. I’ve written/co-written TORSO with Brian Michael Bendis, CAPTAIN AMERICA AND BUCKY with Ed Brubaker, Co-created Kate Spencer/MANHUNTER for DC, as well as writing BATWOMAN and WONDER WOMAN '77. Most recently, I also adapted the TRICK ‘R TREAT film into a graphic novel.
TKM: What was the inspiration behind the series, which consists of four short stories?
MA: The notion was to have four stories set in different time periods and different genres, so we have a tragic romance/witchcraft story set in Ireland, a story of greed set in the Old West, a film noir tale set in LA, and a story set in a vaguely Spielberg/Amblin era small town USA.
TKM: Did you do any actual research as far as history or mythological study for TRICK ‘R TREAT?
MA: Enough research to add flavor, but with enough wiggle room for drama’s sake.
TKM: Was horror or the supernatural something that always interested you or was this just a genre you really wanted to do a project on?
MA: I’ve loved horror since watching NOSEFERATU on TV when I was four! And getting to come back to the world Mike Dougherty created was n absolute no-brainer.
TKM: How did you get involved working on TRICK ‘R TREAT?
MA: I had known Mike for years and worked on two of the SUPERMAN RETURNS prequel comics, so when it was decided they were going to do a TRICK ‘R TREAT film adaptation, Mike called me, and I agreed instantly.
TKM: How closely did you work with the artists on this series? Was the work one on one, was it done through email, etc.?
MA: Michael and the editor really managed the artists, but the art team is great and everyone brought their best to the table. Everyone works remotely in comics – you can work for years with an artist without actually meeting in person.
TKM: Was the scripting purely yours or how much say did the artists have on the story?
MA: The final scripts were by me, Mike, Zach Shields, and Todd Casey.
TKM: How closely did you work with the other writers for the series as a whole, as far as themes and bringing TRICK ‘R TREAT together?
MA: I was supplied detailed plots by the guys at the beginning of the process and did my scripts, sent them back and Mike did his final pass.
TKM: What is the strength of these stories in the horror genre, what makes TRICK ‘R TREAT unique?
MA: TRICK R TREAT is unique in that it celebrates all the facets of Halloween; the scary, the funny, the romantic, in a way we have rarely seen before, and with Sam, Mike has created an icon that embodies all of that. He’s our little ambassafor of all things Halloween.
TKM: Favorite aspect of working on this series?
MA: Getting to work with Mike is a pleasure and contributing in any way to the world of TRICK ‘R TREAT, doubly so.
TKM: Do you have any similar projects in the works for the future?
MA: I have a horror-esque creator owned book in development that will, fingers crossed, be on the shelves for next Halloween.
