Science Vs. Cinema update and SPECTRE Supercut!

Copernicus here.  Wow, the reaction to the Science Vs. Cinema THE FORCE AWAKENS supercut trailer was phenomenal!  It was the #1 story in Variety on Friday, and there were articles all over the place, including USA Today, Time, Newsweek, Forbes, Mashable, and the Verge, just to name a few.  We got shout-outs from all around the geek kingdom, but my favorite was from Chewbacca himself, Peter Mayhew!

As a result, more than 1.5 million people have seen the supercut.  And more than 80,000 have seen our 24 minute episode of Science Vs. Cinema:  The Martian, where I delve into the science in the movie.  One Reddit user even insisted it was made as an advertisement for the movie, because there’s no other way we could have gotten access to all those people.  I love it! I do wish we had a piece of that sweet, sweet MARTIAN action, but the truth is that James Darling and I made that as a TV pilot for no budget, by ourselves.  But the good news is that now we’re getting interest from the TV world.  You’ve really only seen the tip of the iceberg about what that show could be.  I hope we can get it picked up so we can do the real version we have in our heads.

Well, now we’re back!  Not with movie science (I’ve been too busy doing real science), but with another supercut!  This time it is a new trailer mashing together footage from the latest adventures of James Bond in SPECTRE!  I say “we” but I had nothing to do with it!  Again, this is just the masterful work of super-editor James Darling.  With the TFA trailer I went through drafts with James and made suggestions, but here I just watched it and said, damn, that’s good!

James had a bit more flexibility here.  For the TFA trailer, the words and dialog were all on a single track, so certain things had to go in a certain order, and there were limitations about how things could be put together.  But here, he had a freer hand, and I love how he was able to tell a story, change the pacing, and have it build to an explosive conclusion.
