Mel Gibson’s recruited another Aussie for HACKSAW RIDGE.
He’s already god Sam Worthington, Rachel Griffiths, Teresa Palmer, Richard Roxburgh, and Luke Bracey onboard, and now none other than Hugo Weaving is joining the cast. He and Griffiths will play the parents of Andrew Garfield’s Desmond Doss, the conscientious objector at the heart of this World War II story.
No idea how big his role will be (phone calls to his son from the states?), but come on. This guy is Agent Smith, Elrond, the Red Skull, V, Megatron, Bill Smoke//Nurse Noakes/Old Georgie, and, of course, Mitzi Del Bra from THE ADVENTURES OF PRISCILLA, QUEEN OF THE DESERT. Any Weaving is better than no Weaving, American accent or no.
This is easily the most high-profile cast for any Gibson-directed film to date (or at least since BRAVEHEART), and it’s great to see the controversial movie star getting this level of talent for this much-anticipated return to filmmaking. They say that there are still some names left to be announced, but I’ll be surprised if any of them are the same kind of immensely talented geek royalty as Weaving.
