Watch yourself, Caesar: there’s a new ape in town, and he was in SAVING SILVERMAN.
Steve Zahn has joined WAR OF THE PLANET OF THE APES, but surprisingly for someone of his level of fame, he’s not playing a human. Zahn’s going full mo-cap to play a new ape character, presumably with no (or very scarce) dialogue.
Why get someone known for his face and delivery to play a primate? Who knows? But I have to assume he has something to do, or else I doubt they’d get him to agree to the role (though Judy Greer didn’t do much as Cornelia in DAWN OF THE PLANET OF THE APES). Or maybe he just likes wearing little dots all over himself.
Plenty has been said about Andy Serkis’ expressive turn as Caesar, and Toby Kebbell gave my favorite performance in DAWN as Koba, so I see the appeal for Zahn to get in there and try a type of acting he’s never really tackled before. I just hope some of that charisma that shines in so much of his work peers through the digital rendering and voice modulation.
WAR OF THE PLANET OF THE APES begins on July 14th, 2017.
