A freshman director will be capturing THE FLASH!

To be fair, it’s Seth Grahame-Smith.

The PRIDE AND PREJUDICE AND ZOMBIES/ABRAHAM LINCOLN: VAMPIRE HUNTER author is in negotiations to write and direct THE FLASH based on the treatment from Phil Lord and Chris Miller.

Aside from two episodes of an MTV series he produced called THE HARD TIMES OF RJ BERGER, Grahame-Smith has never directed anything. He served as writer/executive producer on the adaptation of ABRAHAM LINCOLN: VAMPIRE HUNTER and wrote Burton’s DARK SHADOWS, but THE FLASH, which will serve as the characters first big-screen solo outing, will be his freshman film as a director.

Regardless of my feelings about the two films he’s written (which are somewhat ambivalent), the fact that WB’s handing this tentpole to a former novelist with no feature-film directing experience is a little bizarre, to say the least. I thought Taika Waititi was weird for RAGNAROK, and that guy’s actually directed movies before. For a while, it was becoming vogue to hand over a blockbuster to directors with a successful indie or two under their belts. Now, they’re taking it a step further and hiring a guy with absolutely zero experience. Wonder if he’ll listen to their notes…

I’ll try to be optimistic, even though they’re doing a feature-film version of THE FLASH with a newbie director at the same time the character's on a network TV series, and I’m totally looking forward to Ezra Miller’s take on the character. But come on, how good could those two TV episodes possibly be that they landed him this job?

At the very least, with Lord/Miller and Grahame-Smith devising the script, I'm hoping for something a lot weirder, fresher, and more outlandish than anything I'd expect to see on the CW.

THE FLASH will red your eyes on March 3rd, 2018.
