Aside from the CGI-recreated Bruce Lee, one of the biggest draws of Donnie Yen’s third portrayal of the legendary IP MAN is the faceoff between Yen and former undisputed heavyweight champ Mike Tyson, which you can see hinted at here amidst the clips of the first two films.
Tyson’s acted a bunch (and kills it regularly as a voice actor on MIKE TYSON MYSTERIES), but as far as I know, this will be his first time having a choreographed brawl on film (though he’s briefly beat people up in stuff like BLACK & WHITE and THE HANGOVER). They know they got something there, and are unsurprisingly showing that off in the advertising. It should be really interesting to see Tyson’s intense, knock-down boxing style mix with the grace and speed of Yen’s movements, and though I’m skeptical about the Bruce Lee stuff, that’s more than enough to get me interested in a third IP MAN movie.
But it does worry me when they show off the Sammo Hung table fight from IP MAN 2 in a 40 second teaser. They ain’t got nothin’ new to show off from this one?
IP MAN 3 fights Mr. Dream on Christmas in China, and sometime in 2016 for the rest of us.
