A 360 video of Jakku from THE FORCE AWAKENS!

Facebook debuted their 360 video feature this morning, and it seems like Disney had a particular one all ready to go.

Star Wars: The Force Awakens Immersive 360 Experience

Speed across the Jakku desert from Star Wars: The Force Awakens with this immersive 360 experience created exclusively for Facebook.

That video is a 360, first-person look at planet Jakku, via the front-seat of Rey’s speeder bike. A bunch of folks, including VICE, SNL, and GoPro, have already uploaded 360 videos onto the social media website, but this one is likely the first to be largely, you know…fake.

This is a slick way to promote the film, even to this marketing-weary traveler, and helps keep STAR WARS at the forefront of the tech conversation just as J.J. and Disney are touting how practical they went on THE FORCE AWAKENS. I could see them doing a bunch more of these, not only for EPISODE VII, but for the later SW flicks and the classic ones as well. That other studios will use this to help with their world-building efforts on their big-budget properties is a no-brainer…at least, if the fad holds up.

What you think? Cool, or pointless?

STAR WARS: THE FORCE AWAKENS will Jakku you right out of your seat on December 18th.
