Quint takes a look at Romero's RESIDENT EVIL script and ponders what might have been

Harry here.... personally from the sound of things... this is the resident evil movie that we all wanted to see.... Que Sera... at least playing with this script got George all hungry to chew the flesh a bit in an official 4th LIVING DEAD flick... that Anchor Bay is producing independently (as it should be!!!) Now hopefully they'll go NC-17 as hell and have ZERO CG!!! Romero Zombies must be real. KNB! SAVINI! TURN THEM LOOSE!!!

Ahoy there, sea squirts! The totally crusty seaman here again, this time with another tale to tell, another scar to show off if you will.

Don't worry, this isn't as epic as my LA adventure. Nope. This tale might be big enough to choke a gamin' fish... a marlin... a stingray maybe, but not big enough to choke a whale like my last report. It is in the spirit of the season. Here it goes:

I was sitting in my favorite fishing chair on the stern of the Orca after an hour of trying to lure a big porker up to the surface when my CB went off.

"Amity Point Life Station to Orca. Come in Orca."

Shit. I wasn't going to answer it, but just then the line snapped, throwing me back a little. Damn! I watched the fin of the victorious porker glide through the water like a hot knife cutting through butter into the sunset. Bastard. I'll get him next time.

"Amity Point Life Station to Orca. Come in Orca."

I huff into the cabin, glance at my bat, hesitate, then answer the call.

"Orca here, come in."

"I've got a Mr. Larry Vaughn on the line."

Larry Vaughn? The Mayor of Amity? What does he want? I hope he's not going to give me anymore zoning crap.

"Put him on," I said.

"Ahh... Mr. Quint? This is Mayor Vaughn here. We have a bit of a problem back here... We might need your services."

"What's the problem?"

"Well, you're not going to believe this, but it looks like Amity is being overrun with Zombies!"

"No shit?"

"Umm... no... We're prepared to offer you $3000 if you can clean out the town of all the undead."

"I'll find 'em for three, but I'll catch 'em and kill 'em for ten," I said.

"You know we can't afford that. It's our off season."

I thought for a while.

"OK, I'll do it for three, but only if you throw in a script or two."

He was silent. Ha! He didn't know I knew his son was now working in Hollywood!

"I'll see what I can do. Which ones do you want?"

I ran off a few which he said he couldn't get. Lord of the Rings? No. Spider-Man? No. Jurassic Park 3? No. AI? No. Hmmm.

"How about George Romero's draft of Resident Evil? Given the circumstances, it would be fitting."

There was silence.

"Deal. Now, get over here before the news gets out. This is a very delicate situation, Mr. Quint. Those summer dinks will be happy to swim off the beaches of Cape Cod, the Hamptons, Long Island. You know, beaches not overrun by zombies."

"I'm on my way, Mr. Mayor. Orca, over and out."

I whip out my trusty rifle, make sure I have plenty of ammo and then head inland.

Man was he right. Those undead bastards were all over the place. Truth to be told, the mission was actually pretty fun. I met up with Brody and we were on a mission again. Just like the good ol' days. In the end, I had a kill total of 69 (hehe), a whopping 10 more than Brody. That pussy.

I stormed into the Mayor's office. He was hiding under the table. When I goosed him out, I got my check and my script. It was the first draft, written by Romero based on a story by Romero and Peter Grunwald. Not a bad days work. I walked away with some cash in my pocket, some quality entertainment to read and a years supply of shark chum.

After chopping up the zombie remains, and storing them onboard, I headed back out to sea for some quiet time to read my new script. I arrived at my favorite fishing spot, threw in a couple lines, chucked some zombie chum and went in the cabin. I grabbed a beer, chugged it down in one swallow, crushed the can and then cracked open the script.

This first draft, dated October 7, '98, is pretty damn good. It's not perfect. It could use a nip and a tuck here or there, but it's damn good. It centers on Chris Redfield and Jill Valentine and takes place in a rather spooky house. There is no fucking "Red Queen" evil computer, UMBRELLA's T-virus is the cause of the zombies and the TYRANT is the big boss.

Now, just so you know, I have only played the game once. I really liked it, but, alas, the crusty seaman only has N64, so couldn't have direct access to it. I know some of you are going to be shouting at me because I'm reviewing this script without too much knowledge of the original material. Why do I feel I'm qualified to write this one up? Easy. While I don't know that much about the game itself, I am a whacked out goonie freak for zombie movies. I have just spent my weekend at the Alamo Drafthouse watching Fulci and H.G. Lewis splatter movies. I love the Zombie Genre. This is, afterall, a script for a Zombie Movie, not another video game.

This also means I share the point of view of the majority of people out there, who know very little about the game other than it has the living dead in it.

This script plays a lot like Aliens. This is basically Romero's Aliens. It has our two heroes going into hostile territory with a group of Elite Soldiers. The Army team, S.T.A.R.S., are made up 12 members, including "ROSIE RODRIGUEZ, a tough, body-built babe." Vasquez anyone? Oh well. Rip-off or not, I drool at the thought of a Zombie film done Aliens style. Hordes of the undead getting mowed down by automatic rifle fire. Cool.

The team is made up of the usual Military types. WESKER is the commander of the group. Tough as nails. Knows a lot more than he lets on. BARRY BURTON a "muscular black man with the heart of a teddy," is the second in command. There's the computer techie who hasn't had much combat experience, the female medic, a rookie, a comic relief duo, a "wiry Willem Dafoe type" and a handful of red shirts there only for zombie chow.

The script runs a lot like a video game. It starts off outside the Arkley Mansion with zombie dogs. When inside the group must descend into the bowels of the old mansion. They have to get to level D. They start on level A, then go a floor down to B, then to C and so on. On each floor there are more zombies and various undead creatures until they get to bottom level where the big bad guy awaits.

What? You want a more detailed outline? What the hell! It's not like you're going to see this draft get made!

We start off with a group of heavy hitters sitting at a conference table watching a video of Dr. John Marcus yelling into the camera with all sorts of crazy shit happening in the background. People running, screaming, etc. He gets attacked by something off camera and everything goes fuzzy. It then moves to CHRIS REDFIELD watching Eagles at the crack of dawn. After he's finished watching his birds, he goes to JILL VALENTINE'S apartment, gets back in bed with her. They talk then fuck.

Chris falls asleep and Jill gets a call. It turns out Jill is a member of S.T.A.R.S., the military team listed above, and was part of the first strike team set there. You see, the military types all knew what might happen, so they set a group of 4 or 5 people in that town to hit first while the other army guys are on their way should something go wrong.

She goes in. Her team is attacked at the Arkley Mansion by creatures we never fully see and just about everyone is killed. The head honchos in Washington decide to evacuate the town. Chris goes out looking for Jill and gets hassled by the Army guys evacuating everyone. He escapes, goes to his farm only to find his prized horses eviscerated and the old ranch hand mortally wounded. Something attacked them.

He follows Wesker's team's helicopters to the Arkley Mansion, a place he grew up playing in. Armed with only his trusty Winchester and a bag of ammo, he goes in to rescue his girl. Since he grew up playing there, he knows about secret doors and hiding places throughout the house which end up saving his life many times.

Of course, Jill turns up alive inside the mansion and Chris soon joins up with the Army guys. It turns out the house used to be owned by a famous bootlegger, who was caught. The Government took the house and partnered with a huge corporation called Umbrella to create a virus for use as germ warfare.

Now, for a look at some of the specifics.

-THE HOUSE- Seems really cool. It is described in the script as looking like "a haunted house, a glorious ruin, once spectacular, now mysterious and threatening. The chandeliers and furniture are covered with sheets that ripple on breezes from a thousand faults in the old walls. Indistinct noises echo within the ceiling, the floor..." Really spooky. Really cool.

-THE MONSTERS- Must be broken down into two categories. Zombies and Non-Zombies-

-ZOMBIES- Top notch. Zombies of every walk of life... or death... Not to sound too much like Cheech here, but we got Human Zombies, dog zombies, monkey zombies, horse zombies, crow zombies and, the creme de la creme, shark zombies! How fucking cool is that? SHARK ZOMBIES for crissakes! Godbless George Romero!

-NON-ZOMBIES- There in an overgrown snake that snacks on a few marines. There is a killer plant that sucks a guy totally dry in seconds. There are a bunch of those Hunters from the video game and the big bossman, The Tyrant himself.

-THE BUSH- None, I'm afraid.

-THE GORE- Plenty! I mean, c'mon. This is a George Romero zombie script. A quick peek for you little sea squirts: There's a horse that tries to stand after its been mauled and its intestines fall out. There's about 50 zombie headshots, there are legs ripped off, animal body parts "which [are] trying to CRAWL," a zombie dog eats out somebody's heart... through the poor bastard's back! Lots of zombie bites. "Another zombie appears suddenly... BITING out the muscle between [the] shoulder and the neck." A zombie bites someone's cheek off. Hunks of flesh are torn from arms, legs, etc. There's a zombie that gets melted by acid, but still comes after the group because the acid hasn't reached its brain yet. A man is half digested by a huge snake. The Hunters go to work on an unlucky bastard with their metallic claws. The Tyrant skewers a few people with his huge, bionic hand. Ahh. The wonderful world of Romero.

-THE DIALOGUE- A little iffy at times, but this ain't Shakespeare. Most of the dialogue works fine for this story. There's a moment in the script where one of the characters says, "Christ, this is like... Night of the Living Dead!" That put a smile on my face. It sounds a little hokey now, but in context it felt right.

The script ends with only a small percentage of survivors. That's good. The more people killed the better. Yeah!

Overall, this script held potential for a totally kick-ass zombie movie. It didn't seem to hold the resonance that Dawn of the Dead had, but this is a video game movie afterall.

I went into the script hoping to see why the Suits kicked Romero off the project. I'm as confused as ever now. They had a decent first draft. With just a little work it would be a great script. With Romero directing, it no doubt would have been a helluva thrill ride. I mean, you put the master in his environment and just let nature take its course.

Now, in their infinite wisdom, they hired Paul "It really says something that my best movie is Event Horizon" Anderson and he has apparently changed the script to some Matrix-evil computer genre film with none of the characters that the fans of the game want to see. Now, I'm not going to completely pass judgment on his script because I haven't seen it yet. If I get a copy, I'll let you guys know how it fares. BUT from what I have heard about it, it seems like Homewrecker meets Day of the Dead. Romero's script is more like Predator meets Dawn of the Dead meets Aliens.

I don't have a total hatred for Paul Anderson. I have never met the man. He could be a great guy. Sure, he fucked up Soldier in an extraordinary way, but I liked Event Horizon. There was nothing to that movie, but it had some great visuals and creepy atmosphere. I just can't understand the decision process is all. Paul Anderson: Mortal Kombat, Event Horizon, Soldier. George A Romero: Night of the Living Dead, Dawn of the Dead, Day of the Dead, Creepshow, Knightriders, Martin... Hell, Monkey Shines is better than just about every movie Paul Anderson has done.

As negative as I've been towards the man, I just want to reiterate that none of my opinion on the guy is personal. Just comparing his credits to Romero's leaves me stunned. The only thing I can think of is the suits wanted a PG-13 movie and Romero said, "Are you guys nucking futs? This is a zombie movie, for godssake! You know who I am, don't you? You've seen my movies? You have... and you still want me to make a PG-13 movie? Arghhh" You know, something like that.

Well, Romero is reportedly working on the next "Dead" movie and has the adaptation of Stephen King's The Girl Who Loved Tom Gordon on his slate. We'll see some good things from him. The only casualty here seems to be Resident Evil. Who knows? Maybe Paul Anderson will surprise all of us and make his first really good movie. We'll see.

Wait a minute... was that movement? The bucket of shark chum is rattling around. I creep up upon it and find a decapitated head looking back up at me, jaws snapping. Shit! This must have been one of Brody's. Chiefy can't do anything right! At that moment, a huge shark jumps out of the water onto the stern of the Orca, tipping it. Everything, including me!, starts sliding down into his gaping maw. Uh-uh. Not gonna fall for that one again! I grab the decapitated head by the hair, hold it up, Medusa-style, and throw it at the damn shark.

"Chew on this!" I yell. The head strikes the shark's head and starts rolling down his back. Damn! I'm fucked! But wait! The head has bitten down on the shark's dorsal fin! The shark lets out a roar and rolls back into the ocean. I see a trail of blood like a chum line go off into the darkness. I smile to myself... but wait? Now there's going to be a zombie shark out there. Damn. I grab my harpoon gun, tie up a barrel and put the Orca in gear. Off I go, chasing that blood line until I'm swallowed up by the darkness.

Farewell and adieu.

-Quint

    Damn, and to think...

    by BryanS7

...it could've been great. I wish Romero was still on this project. From what Quint said about the stript, it stayed fairly true to the original (Except for Chris Redfield being Jill Valentine's F*cktoy, apparently.. that's kinda messed up). I hope to God someone assassinates Anderson before he does this crap with a supercomputer, which has nothing to do with Resident Evil at all. At least stay true to the source material... And Barry being Black was kinda messed up, too.

  • Anyone else see Scream and Scream Again, the Mark Kermode slasher documentary on UK's Channel 4? It was cool to see Craven, Carpenter, Hooper, Savini all in new interviews.*****Anyone else read Romero's original Day of the Dead script? There elemnts in it that George could resurrect for his 4th Dead Movie. Resident Evil? Really who gives a fuck anymore?

    by Darthnagus

They take a great premise, a great game, and fuck it in the ass, turning it from a kick ass ZOMBIE movie into a shite-sounding EVIL COMPUTER movie which just happens to have zombies in it. I mean seriously, is this thing gonna blow like hell or what?

    by XTheCrovvX

To think, this is the Resident Evil flick we could've gotten....and if all this was to get a family friendly PG-13 movie out there, then i have no more faith in the movie industry...if this is the road we're heading down for every movie, then im scared for all the kickass movies that wont get made because of this crap. Not that i hate Paul Anderson, mind you....Mortal Kombat was great...before TNT ran the damn thing into the ground.....Im one of the few who actually like Event Horizon....on the other end of the spectrum, though, I avoided Soldier like the plague...but the second i heard his script had neither Jill, nor Tyrants, nor any mention of S.T.A.R.S., i fear the future of this movie.....if youre going to make a movie based on a video game, let me give you a little hint for surefire success....shhhh...dont tell anybody....STAY TRUE TO THE SOURCE MATERIAL!!!!!! Thank you....now if you'll excuse me, i have to go play myslf some Marvel vs Capcom 2...might be the last time i ever see Jill Valentine on screen....Revolution is my name...."I'm a member of S.T.A.R.S.!"

I hope this movie gets cancelled. It's going to ruin the cult following of resident evil.Romero shouldn't have been fired.Fuck Capcom!Fuck Anderson!Fuck Resident Evil movie! But the games are still top fucking notch creepy and the best games ever!

  • That's why statements like 'This is like Night of the Living Dead' are called 'groaners'. And don't get me started on the 'comic-relief duo'. I bet the script has a little copyright symbol next to that, like they licensed the use rights to the comic-relief duo from the Warehouse of Crappy Bit Parts.

whoa whoa whoa lets hold up a second

    by sundown

lets put thing sin perspective Quint. You sayRomero has this huge list of A credits...well he hasn't had a hit ever. In fact his films are hardly theatric releases. The guy is planning to do the next dead film with a 2 million dollar budget. I suspect this is a guy who makes nice little films but just can't handle a big budget hollywood film and the makers i.e. Capcom don't want a small cult film. Lets look at what happend when Tobe Hopper and John Carpenter were given a budget...Escape from LA and Lifeforce...not their finest moments. Now DOTD is a great film but it was a smuch comedy as anything else...sorry I laughed hard IT WAS SCHLOCK! Day was a pretty lame film and his original script was grand and cool but I somehow doubt he could have pulled it off had he had the budget. Can you imagine ROmero fx with monsters with metal claws! Cheese! As far as P Anderson everyone is jumping the gun assuming that the last "scoop" about Red Queen is real and that it will be a pg 13 film. I MIGHT have believed it had Harry not bashed this guy so hard...now I suspect it is propaganda or just unsubstantiated 'news' Harry is all to happy to print even if it may not be true "see I TOLD you guys flame away!" SO in this one case I will belive it when I see it. Event Horizon was not pg 13 and had more to it then visuals and I don't see how you can think Romero films are 'deep' and look down your nose at anyone...fanboy snobbery gotta love it. Bottom line is I thought all his films were fun and looked good, they also had a "big" feel that Romero could NEVER capture. I'll check it out and ignore Harrys propaganda and 'comments'.

    Final Draft

    by Morgus

George hammered away at many more drafts subsequent to the Oct 98 First Draft you have there. For the record, his Final Draft (dated mid '99) was much better than the already quite good First Draft. I wish the new guy the best of luck, but Romero was the man for the job. Check out my site for up-to-date Romero news straight from the Big Guy himself. http://bruiser.8m.com

    Ewok Yub-Yub Zombies

    by abner ravenwood

In an effort to make a family-friendly zombie movie, the Paul Anderson version of "Resident Evil" has comic relief 'gay' robots and a polar bear fight for inexplicable reasons. Oh and a major set piece built around an Ewok 'yub-yub' celebration. There are also big plans for zombie inspired happy meal tie-ins and an educational zombie 'learning game' for the PC from Mattel Interactive. Youngsters will learn about the delicate balance of the ecosystem by constructing zombie cesspools and can micromanage their own zombie cities.... What the hell has happened to us? How did we get so lost? Where did the movie business go so horribly wrong? Once upon a time, people were actually concerned about making good movies....the reason The Matrix was so successful with audiences was they weren't making a toy commercial. They weren't doing fast food tie ins and cans of soda. Of the comic book adaptions of recent years, "Blade" is my favorite. And it was a success for the same reason. They just wanted to make a good movie. And to hell with all the merchandising licensing crap. And they didn't let the MPAA ratings system second guess creative decisions. I mean, a PG-13 zombie movie??? That's ridiculous! It's gonna be R and it should be! Live with it! Adjust the budget if you have to but don't churn out a sub par movie in this silly atempt at political correctness. Roger Ebert is absolutely right that the ratings system needs a complete overhaul for this very reason. It's just silly. Taking an R rated movie and adjusting it to a PG rated box is irresponsible and it cheats the audience. Romero Rules!!!!

    Resident Evil

    by Sommerset Mills

Hey, guys! Sommerset Mills here, nurturing apathy amongst the rainy streets of ol' New York City. Now, I completely understand the popular reaction toward Paul Anderson getting the job to helm this flick. Personally, I think it's a mistake. But I'm a big fan of fighting for the little guy, espeically when it's a director who's showed at least a modicum of promise. Romero, yes, 100%, go with him first! But Event Horizon was a damn good flick, and it worked for me both visually and as a horror flick. If Anderson can pick up the ball that he was so effectively using with EH, and so blatantly dropped with Soldier, then I think we could be looking at a pretty good Resident Evil flick. The main idea of this new draft doesn't sound so bad. I think everyone wants to crucify it just because it's not Romero, but, aside from the fact that the original game storyline isn't being used, there seems to be at least some potential in the new idea. All I'm saying is, don't take out your wrath on the man just yet. It'd be a horrible waste of a perfectly good sin.

    by Straw Dog

Are you totally stupid or something how bloody hell can you say that a piece of yak crap like Knightriders is better than the Sci-fi horror genius of Event Horizon. And you people are meant to be bleedin film fans!!! Take the shite out of yer eyes, people!!! We all know that, George Romero is a class act, and I love him to do Resident Evil, like we all would. But the fact remains that he ain't. I'm sure that Paul Anderson is going to good job!!

To da guvna, all 8(and soon to be 9) Final Fantasy games have different casts, storylines, etc....only things that link them are chocobos and various moogle references....as for seven11, bashing my beloved N64(to be fair, i have a psx and a DC too) is a minor sin(Perfect Dark, Majora's Mask, and WWF No Mercy....bow down!), but bashing Capcom is FUCKING BLASPHEMY!!!!! though, i think they let american filmmakers fuck up their games just to piss in our faces...we all know the comparison between the live action Street Fighter(otherwise known as "The Flick O' Pain") and the anime Street Fighter (otherwise known as "Proof God Exists").....now, if i find out that in a year or so, after Paul Anderson's piece of Capcom desecration that a Resident Evil anime is coming out, and it rocks ass hard in a way inconceivable, i'll be the first person to cry like a four year old, begging japanese gamers to stop laughing at us...Revolution is my name...

My two cents on some stuff:

    by Acid_Rain327

First up, this draft sounds cool and all (after skipping through the pointless anecdote...), but it's too mindless for me. Second, Capcom hasn't created anything original since...damn, it's been too long for me to remember. Right now, those folks are living off complete rehashes of RE and 2D fighting games, making millions. What the f**k is Street Fighter Alpha 4? Or Resident Evil: Code Veronica? Come on... And this goes on while folks at companies like Rare are busting their asses to create a new experience with every game. And finally: PS2 sucks total ass, just as I predicted. It looks exactly like the PS, only with a slighly faster processing speed and better lighting effects. I went down to a local Fry's electronics and they had a playable PS2 with Tekken or something set up (purposely) next to a playable Dreamcast with Soul Calibur. Needless to say, the DC beat it out of the f**king water. Anyone who buys that thing for $300 (!) is either out of their mind, or actually have the intent of asking Sony to please push this worthless crap on us for years to come.

    Script

    by cynicaster

It's ironic how Romero obviously tried to keep so true to the the story of the game and Anderson is pulling this crap out of his ass that wouldn't be a good idea even if it weren't a Resident Evil movie.

    Romeros resedant evil

    by kenaz

It would have been cool but it would have never worked.Capcom know that a large percentage of people who have played resident evil are under 17.George is infamous for sickass gore and his films dont do well because there just to cool for mainstream audiances. If George had made it though it would have gathered a cult fan base.Unlike Paul Andersons version which will go straight to video and join Streetfighter,Mario Bros, and his very own Mortal Kombat and many more shite videos which clog the video racks up and just gather dust.I hate Event Horizon as well.Romeros 4th Dead film will rule.

LifeForce, I remember that. Vampires from space do London, nudit

    by Roger U. Roundly

There was a nasty blow job in that one I think. Romero's script sounded *Cool*, pity. Anderson's version sounds lame. Evil Computers have been done to death and they don't age as well as Zombies. trust me, my 'puter was new six months ago and now it's fuckin two years out of date. If that's not evil, I dunno what is. Ooh! who remembers "The Kindred"? I loved it when that chick turned into a giant Trout at the end.

    MONKEY SHINES RULES!!!

    by EL Duderino

The ending alone is the greatest ending ever caught on film! That blew even Casablanca out of the water! Anybody who thinks lesser of Monkey Shines should fall victim to that crazy little chimp! And who cares if in reality parapeligics can't have sex!? IT'S FILM!! Oh, and it sucks that Resident Evil fell into the wrong hands, that script seemed really sweet to me, but all that means is that Romero can take some of the best elements from that one (that horse zombie idea was pretty freaky) and roll it into NIGHT OF THE LIVING DEAD 4!! One last note, Harry, was it you that said that the NOTLD DVD that came out was horrid?

If you'll be so kind as to indulge me...a-a-hem..."Watch out Jill, he's insane!" "You were almost a Jill sandwich!" "Why don't you take this lockpick, Jill. You're the master of unlocking." "Chris is our old partner, you know!" "Wesker is a CRAZY MAN!" "I thought you were going back to the dinning room to do some research" Man. Oh. MAN. That game has some great SHIT dialogue. And from what I've heard about Anderson's script, it sounds like that that aspect will remain. Does anyone have a bona fide synopsis of Anderson's version? I mean, more about the *GASP!* EEEEVIL COMPUTER! BA-BA-BA-BAMMM-BAMMM! Zombies, not evil computers! Bad Hollywood Bad! Oh, poor Paul Thomas Anderson for having to share a name with Loser McLoser.

Why do you misguided twits constantly kneel in front of Romero a

    by Tender Branson

Once again, he had one GOOD MOVIE which was called "Night of the Living Dead". "Dawn of the Dead" and "Day of the Dead" were both massive circle jerks with too much gore, no characterization what so ever and direction that frankly shows exactly why Paul Anderson chose to wipe his ass with Romero's script. The man is a one hit wonder who has since turned into a massive HACK!! He's joined the ranks of John Carpenter and Wes Craven as once good, but now SHIT DIRECTORS!!!!! Paul Anderson directs halfway decent B-Flicks and that's all "Resident Evil" was ever meant to be. Zombies never were and never will be a source of serious sci-fi horror, no matter how much it would 'rock'. They're a joke and always will be. Once you're past the gore, they are the least scary monster that you can put on screen. I was really kind of hoping a "Resident Evil" flick would never get made. It doesn't need a movie, because it already was a movie and a FUCKING AWFUL one at that. Great game, but shit dialogue and bullshit premise. Sorry, that's the way it is and if you people would pulls your heads out your asses and take a few moments away from suckling at Romero's rectum, you'd see that "Zombie Films" will always be something that is in the simplest definition, a contradiction in terms. There's nothing serious about a zombie, I don't care if it's your mom trying to chow down on your tasty brains, there's always going to be something inherently STUPID about them and that's why "Zombie Films" will never happen and shitty, poorly written "Zombie-MOVIES" will constantly be made. There's really no serious way to write about the living dead. Even in "Night of the Living Dead", the zombies were comical, ridiculous and kind of pathetic. It's just not a serious subject. However, if done right, it makes for great B-Flick material. Everyone seems to think that Romero is the only one who can make a decent Zombie-Flick and it just ain't so, since he's 1 in 3 and fading fast. He cares too much about gore and forgets that gore is THE FUCKING LEAST IMPORTANT INGREDIENT IN A HORROR FILM! So, I'm gonna give Paul Anderson a chance and go see his "Resident Evil" flick. I happen to think that abandoning EVERYTHING about the game is the right path to take. The game premise was dumber than a box of dried shit and whatever he comes up with, I'm positive it'll have better dialogue than anything in "Resident Evil" which unfortunately had better dialogue than either of Romero's last "Dead" movies. So quit bitching and screaming, "ROMERO IS GOD!!". He's a joke and if anyone gives him a budget, you'll see how badly he can really fuck up.

    And uh....

    by Tender Branson

LAY THE HELL OF "LIFEFORCE"!!!!!! That flick was better than anything that hack Romero could direct on his best day. "Lifeforce" rocked and was actually a fully, (if kinda hokey, I wonder if Patrick Stewart ever wakes up with night sweats after nightmares people still remember this flick?) realized flick, that was cool as hell at times.

    i still don't like it...

    by iori47

speaking as a fan of the game, though i revere Romero as a God among Zombie movies, i still don't quite dig his idea for RE. given, the game's plot was typical and even dated at times, Romero and Anderson both had the potential to tell it in a way where they could make it look classy. with Romero, we at least had the same characters (after a fashion) and *some* of the plot elements from the game still intact... with Anderson... uhhhh... but still, as much as i dig Romero, i'm not too sure that the RE he was planning would have been the best. it would definitely be *BETTER* than the crap that Anderson is pumping out, but still not the best way for RE, i think.

    Something confusing me

    by 2GOLD

Ok, Capcom didn't like the Romero version because they felt it was too much about the zombies (apparently Capcom doesn't play their own games). So how exactly is a RE script with no characters from the game, a different storyline and just zombies with a super computer being allowed by Capcom? I'm really confused here, why would Capcom let the game with the best chance at being a blockbuster film be just turned inside out? I've got no probs with Anderson as a director but why did he take the job to make a movie based on a video game and then just dump the game? How is this happening? Anderson may be able to make a decent film but he really needs to rename this cause if it's released as RE and then no one gets RE, it will die a horrid death.

Why Romero Was Fired... And Should Have Been

    by Saluki

Just wanted to make a statement of why the script for George A. Romero was never fufilled. To understand, you fully must understand what Resident Evil is. It is NOT a lousy zombie game. It is a full series with planned out characters with years of background. Romero seems to have blown all that away in a a single script. First off, "ROSIE RODRIGUEZ, a tough, body-built babe" , was never in the game series. This was a simple spin on the Bravo S.T.A.R.S. team leader (an older male), who was later killed by the Alpha S.T.A.R.S., Wesker. Romero really did rip that from Aliens. Second, "BARRY BURTON a muscular black man with the heart of a teddy," Barry was a a bumbling verteran that had heavy ties with Chris, but he was also not Black. What does that matter, right? Well Barry also has red hair and a heavy beard and you could notice him from a block away. Over the past four years since the release of the first Resident Evil, Barry is easy to point out, turning him into someone else really does not stay true to the series and can lead to needless confusion. Third "a comic relief duo", uuhhhh, no. Resident Evil could be funny from the voice actors, but otherwise this was not a comical romp. This was survival horror and you get out at the last second. Fourth "It then moves to CHRIS REDFIELD blah blah blah he goes to JILL VALENTINE'S apartment, gets back in bed with her. They talk then fuck." These two central characters never had a true relationship. Putting them together at a moments notice kills years of fanbase specualation. Oops. Fifth "Since he grew up playing there, he knows about secret doors and hiding places throughout the house which end up saving his life many times." Chris and the entire team in the game had never been to the mansion. This added to exploration and never knowing how this would come about behind the next door. Also, Chris is a part of S.T.A.R.S. in the games, why this was changed I don't know. Sixth "SHARK ZOMBIES for crissakes! Godbless George Romero!" George Romero had nothing to do with this. The Neptune shark was already in the game. There are a million other reasons, but the main reason is because the script resembles the series in name only. Just like that horrible Super Mario Bros. movie. Capcom wanted a great zombie director, they owed a lot to Romero, but somehow Romero just screwed up a ton of things that could have been perfectly fine the way they were. I really think you all owe it to yourselves to either pick up a Sony Playstation (Or even Playstation 2) and pick up the Resident Evil Trilogy. The Sega Dreamcast also carries Resident Evil 3 and Resident Evil Code Veronica (proof that we don't even NEED a movie anymore, the games are heavily cinematic now). The Nintendo 64 carries Resident Evil 2, does not show why the script you read is way off base, but still amazing. Blah Blah Blah

SALUKI's right OR QUINT is a jackass!!!

    by leondark

Hey men! Quint is a jack ass bastard! This is not first time he attacks Paul Anderson. This is always like that - when people can't get anything in the showbiz they become critics, and start talk shit. Personally I believe Paul Anderson has a good sense to what should be a mansion/hounted house movie and pardon me but what I feel RESIDENT EVIL will be a something like EVENT HORIZON meets DOOM. People - EVENT HORIZON was one of the best movies I seen in years and despite SOLDIER was bad this is no reason to pu a crap on Paul Anderson. This is a nonsense. Paul has a great visual style and a lot of professionalism. Stop that crap on Paul and stop a crap on EVENT HORIZON. For movies sake EVENT HORIZOn was much scarier than ALIENS (after part 2). Event HORIZON much better than any standard zombie film and ROMEROS sucks! IMHO Leon Dark

    There is no debate

    by POPPYCOCK

This is really sad because there is no debate. none. I find it quite heartbreaking to see people siding with Anderson. All we will get from him would be shitty CGI FX, a terrible techno score which totally ruins the zombie atmosphere, and as you know, a totally unrelated plot of his own design. Why couldn't he just make his movie but not call it Resident Evil? You think he would know that he's gonna piss off every fan of the game! But that just goes to show you that he really doesn't care about the true fans and is trying to appeal to the mainstream audience who always swallow every piece of shit handed to them. It's all about money folks. It'll be toned down and shaped for everyone to enjoy. Basically the "Dude, Where's My Car" of horror films(though calling it "horror" gives it way too much credit). I can't wait for when it comes out and people see how shitty it is(and believe me, it will be), then all these whining Anderson supporters and Romero bashers will have to eat their fucking hats. I have no time for what any of the Anderson supporters have to say, I don't care at all. Let them chat away. Any horror fan with half a brain knows that Romero is the man for the job. He set the rules and standards for the whole genre for chrissakes! Hell, the damn videogame wouldn't have even existed if it weren't for Night Of The Living dead! Sure, he changed some plot points(not nearly as many as Anderson!!!), but everyone knows that translating a book(or video game) to a movie is never Minute Rice perfect. I'm not saying I agree with that, but sacrifices have always had to be made, especially if you want to pull a small video game plot to a full length feature. Romero's the only man for the job. And if he fails...then we know it could have never been done in the first place.

    What?

    by The Anarchist

First of all, I just wanted to make note of a comment made a few posts back about how Romero's script didn't stay true to the plot of the game. That's a very good point, I would have been disappointed to see a black Barry Burton (no offense, it's just that he wasn't black in the game) and I considered it fairly important that Chris Redfield be a member of STARS. At the same time, I can't understand how you could mention so many of Romero's shortcomings in his script without mentioning any of Anderson's. I mean come on, a super-computer? Where the hell does that fit into the game? I believe Anderson is just trying to play off the Matrix. "If it's a movie about an evil computer it HAS to be successful!" I don't know the details of why Romero was dumped. But if he was dumped because the script didn't run close enough to the game, why is Anderson still being allowed to work on it? I think RE, done right, has the potential to be a good movie. But it needs to be done by someone who realizes what the game is. I wonder if Romero or Anderson ever actually played the game or just read a rough synopsis of it and wrote what they wanted. Right now, while I'd love to see an RE movie, I think Anderson needs to just change the title of whatever he's doing, because if it keeps going in the direction it seems to be going now, the movie that goes on screen, will not be Resident Evil.
