Bourne vs. Vincent Cassel

The Night Fox will be exacting revenge on at least one of Danny Ocean’s old crew.

Vincent Cassel has signed on to feature as the latest villain of the BOURNE franchise. He’ll likely be playing the Clive Owen/Karl Urban/Edgar Ramirez/Louis Ozawa Changchien character, the superspy traversing the globe to hunt down our hero. This is probably the part that Viggo Mortensen was up for and passed on.

No knock on Vijjo Morgenstein, but I can’t say this doesn’t tickle me in all the right places. Cassel’s one of those dudes who truly shines in villainous or shady roles, and has been killing it in film after film since his breakthrough in Mathieu Kassovitz’ incendiary LA HAINE. He’s had a good run in the English language as well, depicting magnetic heavies/philestines in the latter OCEAN’S movies, BLACK SWAN, EASTERN PROMISES, A DANGEROUS METHOD, and TRANCE. Like Viggo, he’s a tad senior to Mr. Damon, but I like that they’re going with someone who projects panache and superiority in intelligence instead of the laser-focused Wile E. Coyotes of the previous films.

Don’t know how closely his character will work with Tommy Lee Jones’ crooked C.I.A. agent, but my fingers are crossed for a scene of those two planning dastardly deeds together, Snidely Whiplash style.

If they’re really bringing Damon and Greengrass back, this film better be exceptional enough to be worthy of their return, and the cast they’ve lined up so far (which also includes Alicia Vikander) is a good start.

THE BOURNE UNTITLED makes you give an additional two hours of your time on July 29th, 2016.
