The reason we’re only getting Tony Todd’s voice is because the CW version of Zoom will dress a bit like Spider-Man – we won’t be seeing the evil speedster’s face.
“Part of the mystery of the season is who or what is underneath the Zoom outfit, and so we wanted to do something like James Earl Jones as Darth Vader — this iconic voice coming out of this mask,” “Flash” writer-producer tells Variety. “Last year, we thought of the Reverse-Flash as a speed warrior; this year, Zoom is like a speed demon, and no one does demon-voice better than Tony Todd.”
In the comics supervillain Eobard Thawne is known as both “Professor Zoom” and “Reverse Flash,” though in the first season of the CW’s “Flash” Thawne is never identified as Zoom.
Thawne, who was wiped from CW existence at the end of season one, was portrayed by Tom Cavanagh and Matt Letscher.
Zoom will make his CW debut in the coming season’s second episode, titled “Flash of Two Worlds.”
The coming season of “Flash” will explore the CW version of The DC Multiverse -- and my suspicion is the CW Zoom will hail from a parallel dimension. Perhaps he’ll be revealed to be an evil version of Barry or Barry’s father.
Season two will also introduce three characters – Jesse Chambers, Wally West and Jay Garrick – who in the comic books called themselves The Flash at one time or another. Jay Garrick we know comes from the alternate universe Earth-2 and I would wager that the CW’s versions of Jesse and Wally also emerge from universes alien to Barry Allen.
Todd is known to horror fans as the title character in 1992’s “Candyman” and its sequels, but I’ll always remember him for his Star Trek work – as Worf’s angry kid brother Kurn on “The Next Generation” and “Deep Space Nine,” as the middle-aged version of Benjamin Sisko’s son in “Deep Space Nine” and as the Alpha Hirogen hunting Species 8472 on “Voyager.”
