“The Knick” was one of the three best hourlongs of 2014. The prolific Steven Soderbergh (“Contagion,” “Traffic,” “Side Effects,” “Sex, Lies, and Videotape,” “Out of Sight,” “The Limey,” “Erin Brockovich,” “Ocean’s 11” and its sequels, “The Informant!” “Haywire,” “Magic Mike”), who claims to have retired from film directing, directed all 10 first-season hours, which stars Clive Owen as John Thackery, a pioneering, opiate-addicted chief surgeon in pre-antibiotic 1900 New York. Matt Frewer (“Doctor Doctor,” “Orphan Black”) plays Thackery’s mentor.

The appalling state of medicine in turn-of-th-century Gotham turns out to be a fascinating object of focus, and there are plenty of characters to love, starting with Thackery (his withdrawal-fueled rant about the hospital’s need for cocaine was a riot and a highlight), and extending to two-fisted surgeon Algernon Edwards, debt-riddle hospital administrator Herman Barrow, crusading heiress Cornelia Robertson, plucky nurse Lucy Elkins, enthusiastic experimenter Bertie Chickering and tragic, angry family man Everett Gallinger.

The most-improved award goes to sitcom vets Jack Amiel and Michael Begler (“The Tony Danza Show,” “Malcolm in the Middle”), whose big-screen credits included 2004’s “Raising Helen,” 2006’s “The Shaggy Dog,” and the 2012 whale-rescue adventure “Big Miracle”) before they created “The Knick” and wrote most of its episodes.

From Peter Harness, who wrote at least three episodes of “Wallander,” the seven-part miniseries “Jonathan Strange & Mr. Norrell” is based on Susanna Clarke’s massive, beloved and acclaimed 2004 novel about a 19th century magician who hooks up with an upper-class countryman with far more magical aptitude.

Time says:

… the plot-forward strategy necessitated by TV makes the series smart fun from the start, managing impressive spectacle even if it doesn’t have the visual firepower of the most epic Thrones episodes. Jonathan Strange and Mr Norrell is a fleet, entertaining transfiguration that keeps Clarke’s big ideas while pulling a few tricks from its own sleeve. …

... asked to produce more enchantment, they’ve countered by making a largely unremarkable mini-series. … it’s not boring, even if it’s not exactly engaging either. …

… This is often the way it goes with film adaptations of beloved texts. Somewhere in the transposing from page to screen, the life gets lost. Unable to replicate the novel’s pastiche of 19th century writing styles or its vividly imagined alternative history (footnotes and all), the series opts to go all out on the shadowy gothic production design and flimsy digital trickery. It should be astonishing when Strange conjures up a stampede of horses made of sand, yet it plays instead like a rejected effect from one of the Harry Potter films. ... Devotees of Clarke’s book may get some pleasure out of seeing this world replicated, if only as a husk, onscreen.
