Not since Nick Blood was cast as Lance Hunter on “Agents of SHIELD” have we seen such a striking confluence of names.
But here are. Casper Crump has been cast as the famous DC Comics supervillain Vandal Savage.
Like fellow DC Comics icon Carter “Hawkman” Hall, Savage will appear on “The Flash” and “Arrow” before he recurs as the Big Bad on The CW’s superhero spin-off “DC’s Legends of Tomorrow.”
In "Legends" he will prove the chief nemesis of Hawkman, Hawkgirl, The Atom, Firestorm, The White Canary and time traveler Rip Hunter, who builds a Justice League-like team in an effort to thwart Savage.
Savage was created by Hugo-winning science fiction author Alfred Bester (“The Demolished Man,” “The Stars My Destination”) for 1944’s Green Lantern #10. Savage was revealed to be a former caveman born 50,000 years ago and transformed into a superintelligent immortal by a fallen meteor.
Savage has been known by many names over the centuries, including Cain, Alexander The Great, Genghis Khan, Julius Caesar, Vlad The Impaler, and Jack The Ripper. (Savage was not Adolf Hitler, though the two were buddies.)
Like Nikolaj Coster-Waldau and Mads Mikkelsen, Crump is a native of Denmark and a veteran of numerous European productions. Though his American resume is limited, he plays Captain Kerchover in next year’s “Tarzan,” which stars Swedish actor Alexander Skarsgård as titular ape man.
