I am super excited for this one. Emma Donoghue's novel Room was a captivating and thought provoking story. A not-too-far-from-reality (looking at you, Josef Fritzl) story about a kidnapped woman who has spent years trapped in a shed on the property of her captor, with nobody but her young son for company. The son has never known life outside of their tiny room. When his mother engineers a plan to finally regain their freedom, his entire world changes.
Brie Larson is starring in the film, which is sure to earn her some well-deserved buzz. After memorable roles in SCOTT PILGRIM VS THE WORLD, 21 JUMP STREET and the incredible SHORT TERM 12, it's about time for her to become a household name. The film is being directed by Lenny Abrahamson, who delivered last year's fantastic FRANK.
A24 has released the teaser trailer below. Despite its grim subject matter, the story actually carries a great deal of light and heart, largely through being told from the perspective of the little boy. It looks as though Abrahamson is attempting to capture some of this spirit, while still keeping the story emotionally grounded.
The film is set to play at the Toronto International Film Festival in September, before a theatrical release on October 16th. What do you guys think?
