I guess someone realized that a big reason why THE LEGO MOVIE hit was because it was, you know, funny.
Today, Vu Bui, COO of Mojang (the developer of MINECRAFT) announced the director of their upcoming MINECRAFT movie: Rob McElhenney.
Yes, Mac.
The IT’S ALWAYS SUNNY IN PHILADELPHIA star/co-creator is fairly inexperienced as a director, and has only directed three episodes of the long-running show, but he’s got a family movie called FIGMENT that he’s set to write and direct for Legendary. Apparently, he was able to lock down that gig via an impassioned pitch, so I’m thinking he showed a family-friendly side to him that WB finds appealing. The mix of subversive humor and wild animation served them well with LEGO MOVIE, and if Mac knows his way around a family script, then he seems like an attractive hire.
Like THE LEGO MOVIE, MINECRAFT could literally be about anything, but at least now we know that they’re trying to make it funny. Let’s see if McElhenney will be able to make it at least this funny.
