General Lee has been defeated yet again.
And it turns out the only thing corporate America may hate worse than Donald Trump these days is the Confederate flag.
Following the June 17 mass murder of nine black churchgoers in Charleston, S.C., Warner Bros. announced it had stop licensing “Dukes of Hazzard” merchandise, including toy cars resembling the Dukes’ famous orange Dodge Charger The General Lee, which boasts a confederate flag painted on its roof.
That flag also caused TV Land to abruptly drop “Dukes” from its schedule.
And now we’ve word that 36-year-old golfer Bubba Watson, who owns a General Lee car used in the series, is painting the American flag over the Confederate one on the roof.
Watson bought the car for $110,000 at auction in 2012.
“Obviously I love the show, but the flag is offensive to some people,” the golfer explained. “There’s been enough buzz. I thought it was the right gesture for me to do.”
Fearful of controversy, Watson says he hasn’t taken the General Lee out of his garage since moving from Arizona to Florida.
No word on whether on whether Watson is painting over the above-the-door words “General Lee,” a reference to the slave owner and Confederate general Robert E. Lee, who led the fight against the U.S. Army during the American Civil War.
