"Can you comment on what the 'Female GHOSTBUSTERS' will be wearing?"

Until we get a full-fledged publicity shot of our leading ladies in action, this is the closest we’ll get to seeing Paul Feig’s new roster of GHOSTBUSTERS: their uniforms.

Right off the bat, you can see how they’re really going the reimagining route and not straight-up reusing the same elements from Reitman’s original. The colors are different, there are now orange stripes going across the chest area and around the arms, and those iconic name patches, yeah they’re gone. That GB logo on the shoulder’s still there, however, and they’re still apparently hitting up military surplus for the getup, but my first reaction to seeing these was, “Ooo, different!”

I wouldn’t assume that they won’t have proton packs based on their absence from this pic. What you can assume is that they won’t be the same old clunky numbers Venkman, Stanz, and Spengler were wearing when they first strutted into the Sedgewick Hotel. I mean, forget contemporizing them for the modern age; can you imagine Kristen Wiig lugging one of those things around for more than a few minutes of the movie? Sounds more like something MacGruber would make Vicki St. Elmo do…

We keep hearing how different this GHOSTBUSTERS will be, but this is the first visual evidence of how unwilling Feig is to simply turn in a gender-swapping retread. Aykroyd, Ramis, and Reitman had their world worked out, quite literally, to a science, and while I’m skeptical about whether Feig will retain that same level of interest in metaphysics and parapsychology, this makes me excited to see the new gear and gadgets his 21st-century GHOSTBUSTERS will be breaking out.

Do these uniforms make the ruining of your childhood more or less easy to bear?

GHOSTBUSTERS ain’t 'fraid of no ghosts, just the opaque filter of nostalgia, on July 22nd, 2016.
