Big DUNE Article In December Sci-Fi Magazine

Published at:  Oct 16, 2000 6:09:20 AM CDT

El Cosmico here, the fine folks over at the Sci-Fi Channel will very soon be heavily promoting their ambitious new mini-series, DUNE.

Our pal Kozmicthrills (no relation) was kind enough to obtain a copy of the December issue of Sci-Fi Magazine, and scan a bit of it for us.

They basically talk about how they're trying to be VERY faithful to the original novel, they show a bunch of photos, there's a poster, and talk about the process of making the mini-series. A nice read, altogether very interesting.

I know I've mentioned this before, but I'm REALLY looking forward to this series. I mean, Vittorio Storaro is the cinematographer. DAMN! Freaking Vittorio Storaro! The cinematographer from THE SHELTERING SKY, THE LAST EMPEROR, and APOCALYPSE NOW!!! Holy crap. At the very least, we know this mini-series is going to LOOK beautiful. Of course, it would have been nice if Bertolucci was the director, but you can't have everything. I'm sure John Harrison will do a fine job.

Anyway, here are the pics from the mag, and if you haven't already, if you have ANY interest in this mini-series at all, you should go over to the Sci-Fi Channel's DUNE Website and explore. There are TONS of beautiful photos, showing off the elaborate sets and costumes, interviews, trailers (in the Events section), and a fairly large and very informative Q and A section with John Harrison (the writer/director), that's definitely worth reading through. Anyway, the pictures there look better than these:

Well, if they have to do Dune, I'm glad it's as a mini-series.

But what's with the red hair on Paul? (I assume it IS Paul). House Harkonnen are redheads, not House Atreides.Of course, they're all related in the end, but, y'know...that's another book.

    better possible format

    by aleph

Maybe its just me, but always kinda considered that Dune would go great in Anime format, I think it would be the only way you could get ALL of the story(not just the first novel)without costing more than the national debt, plus I think the story lends itself to that look, just consider God Emperor done in animation on the big screen....mmmmm visual goodness, or maybe its just me:)

Oh, George Wendt as Baron Harkonnen...

    by roguewriter

Criminy, that image from the poster art throws me every time -- don't know if it's the angle of the face or just the expression, but... I'll look forward to the scene where he comes gliding into the chamber full of Bene Gesserit, who collectively yell, "Baron!" to which he replies "Hey, ever'body..." OK, it's been a long time coming -- this miniseries better be something to savor!

    Dune doesn't stop there

    by longerdays

Damn return button. Anyway, those of us who know the series (as opposed to those who've only seen that god awful Lynch flick) are fully aware that the story doesn't end after Mau'dib brings rain to Dune. Have there been any rumors of possibly producing any others?
BTW: the anime format is an excellent idea!

    by andy travis

There's e-mail discrimination now? Weird. My "criticism" was more of an observation. I'm looking forward to the series, personally.

    by jedi preacher

I have no quams about Hotmail. I have a hotmail account myself. and I not critizing I'm correcting and adding to the discussion

First off, Paul being of Harkonenn decent is relized in DUNE and the relusting sequels and prequels.

in the poster it looks like he has red hair, but in the production photos u can tell its brown.

As for the anime or even animated version, I say hells yea. I would think it would be f-in cool to see the God Emperor or a guild navigator in anime or cgi.

    Ornithopters...

    by flanner

I see that the poster has a couple flying around in the distance, but has anyone seen the 'Thopter designs from the series?
I built a model of one from the book, and got second place in the Starship Modeler vehicles competiton (another 'Thopter took editors choice, but the strange TIE Tank won.)
It will be intresting to see how they do them-hopefully better than the ones in the movie, which were odd, and boring, both at once.

    Somehow I'm not confident.

    by sorcerer

Regardless of the liberties taken with the text, Lynch's DUNE remains the definitive *visual* rendition of Frank Herbert's universe. This looks more... not quite generic, but the visual style does remind me of FARSCAPE and other recent sci-fi TV shows. The film's look was rather timeless by comparison. (And honestly, I don't have a problem with Lynch's changes. It's a filmmaker's perogative.) Maybe if they could have made a deal with Universal and DEG to use the designs and art direction of the movie in service of the more faithful, expanded script. As it is... well, I'll see it if I can, but I'm not that enthusiastic. If I want the literal, unaltered DUNE story I'll read the book. For the visual rendition I'll take the Lynch version, warts and all.

    Dune- the TV series

    by kdkeydude

Can`t wait to see this epic on the tube. What an excellent story line, and action thriller.I wish there would be another Dune movie,as I think there was and still is a huge following of this sci-fi classic.I also hope if they do a sequel, it is 4hours long,as I can not get enough Dune!

    Dune tv ad

    by volks

Hey, Sci fi is starting to run ads on the air for Dune. A saw a real quick one yesterday that said "A NEW MESSIAH IS COMING" and had a really cool shot of Paul as a fremen and a quick glimpse of the worm and ornithopter at the end. Looks really cool, actually. Not as EDGY as Lynch but it looks solid.

If Norm Peterson is the Baron...

    by sorcerer

Does that mean Cliff Clavin is Piter De Vries? "Actually, Baron, there are a few more stages to the forms of Kanly after the official peace gesture, but they're more technicalities than anything else. The tradition originated shortly after the Butlerian Jihad...."

    Dune the anime?

    by radd

Umm, an animated version of Dune could be nice. Animation has always lended itself well to epic stories with many effects, stages, and characters that would be difficult to reproduce convincingly in a live action format, but as for Dune using 'anime style', well it all depends. Generic 'big eye small mouth' hell no (I cringe at the thought of DBZ, Akira, or Gundam Wing style characters claiming to be Paul, Duke Leto, and the rest), it doesn't fit. I see Dune with (and I hate to use such overused words)a darker and grittier style. Maybe 'sandworn and rugged' are the adjectives I'm looking for? I could imagine some great Dune paintings by Amano, but as for an anime...I just can't see it being done right. I know I've seen the works of artists who did have a fitting style, but at the moment the details escape me. Any suggestions?

Still, I don't think the old Dune film was all that bad (though the inconsistencies with the novel were inexscusable), I loved the visual style to it. Then again it is years back in my memory maybe I should see it again before committing to any comments.
