This per Making STAR WARS, which noted this Twitter exchange between EPISODE VIII writer/helmer Rian Johnson and one his followers, Yassel Iglesias .
JJ Abrams shot THE FORCE AWAKENS in 35mm, a format he’d previously used to great success with his two STAR TREK movies (which were also lensed by TFA DP Dan Mindel). Johnson going the 35mm route as well suggests that something of a textural ‘aesthetic’ is being shaped for this sequel trilogy. It’s lovely to feel that so much care is bring taken when considering minutiae other films/film series might take for granted, if not overlook completely.
Johnson’s STAR WARS EPISODE VIII opens May 26, 2017.
