So…Spade and Fred Wolf went all BACK TO THE FUTURE 2 for the JOE DIRT sequel. Hmm.
This follow-up to the 2001 original is a Crackle exclusive, meaning we can all watch it for free when it debuts in July. The question is whether the low price of free ninety-nine is still too high for this brand of stupid, stupid, stupid white-trash humor.
My 12-year-old self had a good time with the original way back when, and it’s nice to see my favorite cast members (Walken, Adam Beach Dennis Miller, and the ever-gorgeous Brittany Daniel) back onboard alongside newcomers Patrick Warburton and…Mark McGrath (in the Kid Rock douchebag role). But I gotta say nothing in this trailer made me laugh once, and the shoddy production values I was concerned about are fairly evident. To do a time-travel movie right, you gotta put some dinero into the sets and costumes, and we don’t really see enough here to get a sense that they were able to do their period setting justice.
Still, there’s potential in the premise, and as a 20-year Spade fan, I always pull for him when he’s on his own (I even rewatched DICKIE ROBERTS: FORMER CHILD STAR recently to see if time had been kind to that kid-centric laugher…it hasn’t). This is a chance for both Crackle and Spade to prove their viability in the feature comedy department, and I hope this works out for both parties, even if it doesn’t end up being my cup of tea.
I know there are devotees of the man sometimes known as Joe Dirte that will watch and adore this film no matter what, but anything in this trailer working for the unconverted out there?
JOE DIRT 2: BEAUTIFUL LOSER will deliver in Spades (zing!) on July 16th.
