New This Week

The Wire: The Complete Series finally arrives on high-def Blu-ray for the first time ever today. In 2013 Entertainment Weekly named it the best TV series ever. Earlier, comic-book writer Alan Moore (“Watchmen”) and comedian/actor Patton Oswalt also named “The Wire” the best TV series ever. I don’t believe I quite share their opinions, but I can tell you “The Wire” represents really really really good, entertaining and highly, highly addictive television. It’s still one of the best things HBO ever mounted, which is saying a lot.

The final season of “Justified” was not the best season of “Justified,” but did a surprising great job of wrapping up storylines for U.S. deputy marshal Raylan Givens and his criminal frenemies Ava and Boyd Crowder. There was brain-damaged war vet Choo Choo and his ill-fitting auto. Colorado marijuana kind Avery Markham (Sam Elliott, amazing) and his punji-stick war story. Markham henchman Ty Walker wiping his nose on an elderly couple’s laundry. Markham henchman Boon terrorizing a waitress. Wynn Duffy’s henchman and his encounter with Mary Steenburgen’s Katherine Hale. Raylan’s chats with Boyd’s henchman. “Lost” icon Jeff Fahey as Ava’s nutty uncle. “Boardwalk Empire” icon Shia Whigham as Boyd’s hostage. Elstin Limehouse came back, as did Winona Givens Hawkins and Loretta McCready and (speaking of Patton Oswalt) Constable Bob Sweeney. But, as usual, my favorite part of this season was the badass wit that routinely emerged from Raylan’s mouth. Highly recommended.

“Soap” was way too funny and innovative to be labeled a sitcom. Richard Mulligan’s portrayal was hilarious enough to get anybody aboard, but there was also the insult-comic puppet and the butler Benson’s devastating asides. Soap: The Complete Series just went on sale for $23.29. All 90 episodes. That’s $5.83 per season. That’s a bargain. Buy and thank me later.
