For his newish El Rey channel, filmmaker Robert Rodriguez has already interviewed fellow directors Quentin Tarantino, Francis Coppola, Guillermo del Toro, Luis Valdez and John Carpenter. Tonight he tackles Robert Zemeckis.
Look at that clip from tonight’s season premiere of “Halt and Catch Fire.” It’s striking how frequently it seems to mirror Mike Judge’s HBO series “Silicon Valley,” set 30 years later.
I don’t know if AMC’s “Halt” is a very good show, but I can tell you that I watched every episode last season, and I'm probably going to watch every episode this season.
Highly influenced by “Mad Men” (but nowhere near as clever or popular), the first season of “Halt” sort of told a fake version of the true early-1980s story of how a trio of Texas Instruments vets cloned an IBM PC and became a giant by marketing some of the first portable personal computers under the name Compaq.
The second season of “Halt,” even though it takes place in 1985, deals with personal computers starting to link up with each other via something called The Internet. Yes, Usenet aficionados know the Internet was around back then, even if the World Wide Web, with all its fancy hyperlinks, didn’t all but consume it until the 1990s.
