Bill Murray, whose lounge singer character Nick Ansara (aka Nick Thinblood aka Nick Rails aka Nick Summers aka Nick Springs) repeatedly serenaded millions on “Saturday Night Live” in the 1970s, is reuniting with his “Lost in Translation” writer-director Sofia Coppola to mount a Netflix TV special full of him singing classic Christmas carols.
“It’s not going to be live,” Murray told Variety back in October. “We’re going to do it like a little movie. It won’t have a format, but it’s going to have music. It will have texture. It will have threads through it that are writing. There will be prose.”
A Netflix press release teased that the special will star Murray, George Clooney, Amy Poehler, Michael Cera, Chris Rock, Maya Rudolph, Jason Schwartzman, Rashida Jones and Miley Cyrus.
Writers on the project, arriving on Netflix in December, include Murray, Coppola and Mitch Glazer (“Magic City”); Glazer also co-wrote Murray’s Christmas movie “Scrooged” almost three decades ago.
