New This Week

AMC’s “Halt and Catch Fire,” I’m convinced, is an AMC attempt to clone “Mad Men.” It’s not about advertising in the 1960s. It’s about designing some of the first personal computers in the 1980s. But “Halt” is nowhere near as good as “Mad Men.” And it’s never going to win four best-drama Emmys in a row. But God help me, I watched every episode and kind of fell in love with the four central characters. Not a great show to be certain, but highly addictive.

“Cheers” is one of the 10 best sitcoms ever forged. The great David Lloyd wrote on it. The great Sam Simon wrote on it. Ted Danson, Shelley Long, Kirstie Alley, Kelsey Grammar and Woody Harrelson went on to do a lot of stuff, but this was their funniest thing. It was hilarious when it started when nobody watched it and hilarious the night it left the air more than a decade later. There was a earlier “Cheers” complete-series box but it never sold for this little. You can pick up this new 45-disc monster up today for $74.56, which is $6.78 a season.
