Lionsgate Set to Remake CUBE!

Hey guys! Horrorella here...

Vincenzo Natali's 1997 film CUBE is a favorite among cult and sci-fi fans, myself included. The film is awesome - A group of strangers wake up inside this giant cube, comprised of small rooms. Some of the rooms are rigged with lethal traps. The group must band together for survival, employ a shit-ton of math skills, and to try to figure out just why they have come to be here to begin with.

THR reports that Lionsgate is set to revive the film. CUBED will take the same formula of a handful of strangers thrown into a giant, deadly cube structure, but it sounds like the plot will take things a bit futher than the original film did. "Cubed is described as a sci-fi survival thriller about artificial intelligence, humanity and the birth of a new "digital" race."

And though it's definitley an interesting premise, it does sound like the remake could lose much of the ambiguity that made Natali's fllm so awesome. What worked so well for CUBE was its simplicity. So much of the film goes unexplained, which is what makes it so effective. We never really get a clear idea of why the Cube exists or who was behind it (in the original, anyway - the sequels dived into the origin, and it wasn't nearly as fun). CUBED sounds like it will explore a lot more plot territory.

The film is set to be produced by Roy Lee and Jon Spaihts, and will be directed by Saman Kesh, who caught eyes with his sci-fi short CONTROLLER, which you can check out below.

What do you guys think? Would you be on board for a new CUBE?
