Hey all, Ambush Bug here. The reason I didn’t have an AICN HORROR column this week was because I was busy tooling about at C2E2 or the Chicagi Comics and Entertainment Expo all weekend. One of the highlights of the show was getting to take the INSIDIOUS 3: INTO THE FURTHER 4D EXPERIENCE which was set up in the back of the con in a huge trailer.
The whole shebang was set up like a big funhouse where you go into what looks like a trailer full of mystical objects and then make your way through a dark hall and into a room where you get to wear a headset and goggles which give you the Occulus Rift experience which to folks like me who mistakenly call it “Occulus Drift” is sort of like the immersive virtual reality squid experience you see on the black market in Kathryn Bigelow’s STRANGE DAYS. Anyway, this was my first experience with the technology and I while there are a few setbacks (like you can’t see yourself with the goggles on), it is a jarring experience all of a sudden being able to look around and see an entire room filled with spooks, specters, and Lin Shaye explaining to you what the Further and the world of INSIDIOUS is all about.
There’s a lot of “comin’ at-cha!” moments in the experience, not unlike the carnival funhouse rides of old, and I have to admit some of them had me jumping back in my chair. The travelling trailer full of spooky is it’s making its way to select locations throughout the next few weeks leading up to INSIDIOUS 3 which hits theaters on June 5. Personally, while the second INSIDIOUS left me wanting, I still jump quite a few times at the original every time I see it and hope this third installment, which looks to be a prequel to the first film, will be terrifying because we need more good horror in cinemas these days.
