"Bedtime here is 9:30...it's probably best you two shouldn't come out of your room after that." M. Night Shyamalan reminds us of his chops for horror in this trailer for THE VISIT!!

Is it possible that M. Night Shyamalan got his scary back?

Because this trailer for THE VISIT is singlehandedly creepier than anything the director’s come out with since at least UNBREAKABLE. I suppose some of this stuff is extreme enough that it could easily seem campy and ridiculous in the final film, but I found myself more impressed with Shyamalan’s imagery and tone than I’ve been in a long time. This is what I wanted from the guy who brought us THE SIXTH SENSE, none of this other stuff, even the stuff I liked (I will never forget smiling incredulously all the way through LADY IN THE WATER). It’s like that freaky Mischa Barton segment of his second film drawn out for a full feature. And with, you know, old people.

The pseudo-Brothers Grimm overtones are really working for me as well. This is a slick melding of the family stuff in most of Shyamalan’s movies and the type of CONJURING-esque, Blumhouse Productions horror that’s still in vogue right now. Can’t wait to see if this is as eerie and tense as this trailer promises.

If this movie works, it’s an indicator that Shyamalan is at his best in a smaller sandbox and more intimate, low-key narratives. Or with Bruce Willis.

That last line’s a scorcher, huh?

THE VISIT puts you in the oven on *gulp* September 11th.
