"It's...a suit!" Paul Rudd showed off the first clip from ANT-MAN on Letterman last night!

Paul Rudd was on David Letterman last night, and brought with him the below ANT-MAN clip.

It seems to be from early on in the film, with Scott Lang inadvertantly finding the suit that turns him into the titular hero. He’s still decidedly in catburgler mode here, and we see Michael Pena as one of his thieving cohorts.

I have to say that, even in this brief clip, I feel like we’re getting more of a sense of the actual tone and style of Peyton Reed’s flick than we’ve gotten from either of the eye-grabbing trailers thus far. It seems light on its feet, with Rudd’s goofy, “Nice!” seeming somewhat Star Lord or Tony Stark-y. There’s some fast editing and whip-pans, but I don’t think this looks or feels ANYTHING like an Edgar Wright movie, so I guess Adam McKay and Peyton Reed have successfully shed the project originator’s original intention (unless Wright was toning it down hardcore on this one).

If keeping fans hopeful is Marvel’s ultimate goal here, then they should really break out more of the funny and/or spectacle to give audiences a reason to give a hoot about this also-ran Summer ’15 MCU tentpole. As someone who’s been reading about this movie’s progress for years, this clip hardly makes a dent, so I can’t imagine what someone with a fresh perspective would say about this short peek. I'm still waiting for the grand-slam footage to get folks as excited as they were for GUARDIANS OF THE GALAXY this time last year, but maybe we should just temper our expectations and wait to judge the final film on its own merits. I'm sure it can be done.

What do you guys think of this first clip? Does it live up to the standards of Marvel’s highs as a movie studio, or does it look like scrapping the whole shebang might’ve been the best bet?

ANT-MAN puts the “motion of the ocean” theory to the test on July 17th.
