Simon Pegg - co-writer of the upcoming third installment in the Abramsverse STAR TREK franchise - spoke to MTV about his approach to scripting the new movie.

Pegg reveals that he and co-writer Doug Jung have very much re-exposed themselves to the original STAR TREK series.

“It’s an incredible show when you watch it - how little they had.  We think of STAR TREK as this huge thing, but it started out as these…sort of…little, thoughtful plays…[EDIT]…dealing with incredibly human and intellectual ideas.”

[EDIT]

“It has become something else now.  We’re in a different world now.  STAR TREK has to be something else now.”

[EDIT]

“We can certainly invest in it the spirit of the show, and get back to the essence of what it is.  What we’re hoping to do is make a STAR TREK for today  - that doesn’t forget where it came from.”

Pegg goes on to reveal that Idris Elba would play a new character in the film.

“This is ‘the Five Year Mission’ now.  We’re out there.  We don’t always have to keep bumping into the same people.  It’s a massive universe.  [EDIT] So we’re going to try and reflect that in the movie.”

Regarding whether or not Elba is officially in the picture, Pegg admits to a margin for error as he’s not always in the loop with such matters, but confesses…

“Yeah.  As far as I know, that’s happening.”

Pegg indicates that filming on the next TREK (called STAR TREK BEYOND?) should begin this Summer (June).   He also discusses his reaction to THE FORCE AWAKENS footage that he’s seen, and his involvement in the MISSION: IMPOSSIBLE franchise.  It’s a fun video…check it out.
