From the set of John Carpenter's GHOSTS OF MARS

Published at:  Oct 04, 2000 2:39:44 AM CDT

Hey folks, Harry here... ya know, I can't wait to see this baby. It could be very very hardcore cool. However, I have this whole big fear that this film will be sacrificed before the altar of blandness coming down from the folks up on high... However, violent it is... It's on Mars... and their killing Martian screwheads (you'll get that when you see the film) Now I've read the script... It's fun... fun in the way that John Carpenter films can be.... Here ya go...

Harry,

Hey I am a big fan of the website and I have some things to say about the
Ghosts of Mars movie coming from John Carpenter. I was on the set of the
film for a good two weeks straight, I really don't want to say doing what
because I really don't want to be sued by some hollywood jerk. But here we
go, from what I have seen it looks like the movie could go either way,
Cheesy stupid or Fucking Awesome.

The main bad guy who they have
affectionately deemed Big Daddy Mars on the set looks really cool. He wears a
big black...outfit but his face is painted all white and he looks like a
really cool version of death. The extra's are really cool I mean when you
have about a hundred mutilated people walking around it brings a tear of joy
to your eye.

There are tons of explosions, it seemed like there was an
explosion every night, and people loosing arms, heads, getting stabbed with
spears and horribly burned. Some things you have to look forward to. Ice
Cube running down a hill screaming, "DIE YOU BRAINLESS MOTHER FUCKERS!" and a
Lewis from Revenge of the Nerds is one of the good guys that comes to the
rescue.

The only thing that worries me is that it seemed that the script
might be a little weak. But if you are going for blood, gore, horrible
mutilation, and explosions then G O M will be right down your alley.

What HAPPENED to the guy? ESCAPE FROM L.A., VAMPIRES, VILLAGE OF THE DAMNED... what happened to the lean, mean visionary who graced the screen w/ ESCAPE FROM NEW YORK and THE THING? Who rewrote horror w/ HALLOWEEN and THE FOG? (oh shut up, it was cool, despite John Houseman and that wormy kid) I swear, watching what's happened to our 80s genre icons must be how it feels for diehard hippies to look around and see their fellow antiwar crusaders from the 60s buying BMWs and settling down in $1M houses in the heights. Carpenter, how about, oh let's say, NOT fucking this one up? And smack Wes Craven for us, willya? RED VIOLIN, please... I want a vicious modern remake of THE HILLS HAVE EYES, thank you very much! ....... (Sorry, all. I'm just cranky because THE EXORCIST isn't playing in freakin backward-ass Alabama, despite being the #2 flick in America for two straight weeks...) RR

He is a genius. Maybe he wasn't hitting the highs he hit a while ago, but come on. VAMPIRES was a brave movie to make, and is fun on a certain level. You know Europe considers the guy one of the classic American directors. He is easily up there with Cameron.

Have all of you forgotten Carpenter's best film? It was made in the 90's..... IN THE MOUTH OF MADNESS... probably one of the best horror films in recent memory.... sure, Carpenter also hit gold with THE THING and HALLOWEEN, but that's his truly great film. To me, he couldn't do better.

    by dastickboy

Sorry guys, but Carpenter hit his horror peak with The Thing.

He's just cult now - which is no bad thing, I still think he's the bee's knees. It's just that after that bunch of films in the late 70's early 80's, his movies have all lacked a certain spark.

    by flynno

I promise everyone not to pass negative judgement on this one yet. I cannot reveal WHY I know this, suffice it to say that my sources are airtight, that this movie is one of your favorites, you just don't know it yet. How do I know? I can see things no one else can see, I can do things no one else can do... From what I hear, the attitude and style of this will be a mix of Assault on Pct. 13, The Thing, Escape From New York, The Road Warrior, Total Recall, and some Evil Dead 2 type gore mixed in for fun. You think about Hollywood toning down...when has Carpenter ever given a crap what anyone else thought? For good or bad, you have to give him that. If people don't like a film, he doesn't care, he just goes out and makes another one. You just listen up to the ol' Pork Chop Express and take his advice on a dark and stormy night...this film WILL RULE!
And I know people won't believe this, but I hear Natasha Henstridge will be the biggest badass in a Carpenter film since Rowdy Roddy Piper in They Live!! If this film is not cool, I will send you each and every complainer 35 cents to call your momma on a payphone and whine about it. -flynno

In the Mouth of Madness, Halloween 3, Escape from LA, They Live, Prince of Darkness - each & every one complete and utter shite. And this doesn't sound any different. This is a director living off the reputation of 2 or 3 movies made about 20 years ago. You only have to look at him to see what a tosser he is.

PRINCE OF DARKNESS was very good, VAMPIRES wasn't bad, and you know my views on IN THE MOUTH OF MADNESS already. And to top it all off, you said that Carpenter made Halloween 3!! He had nothing to do with that piece of shit (except for music and a bit of producing).... man, check your facts before you bash.
Okay, the reason not many people talk about DARK STAR is because it is very hard to find in North America, and thus is hard to access... you literally have to go searching for it.

    by nicebri

I wonder if that 'motherfucker' line is a conscious allusion to the 'Straight Outta Compton' record, or just serendipity. On the 2nd track (Fuck Tha Police), Ice Cube did his first bit of voice acting, IIRC. He's the cop that comes before Judge Dre's court - here's the lyric: Judge Dre: "The jury has found you guilty of bein a redneck, whitebread, chickenshit muthafucka." Cop:
"Wait, that's a lie. That's a goddamn lie. I want justice! I want justice! Fuck you, you black muthafuckaaaaaaaaa!"
I haven't listened to that record since the LA riots. Damn that shit was dope.

    by wee willie

I love John Carpenter. I really do. But I also hate him. It's like there's two personalities in his head. One's a genius, one's a hack. This is just my opinion, and what the hell do I know, but on the genius side there's: Halloween, The Fog, The Thing, Escape From New York, Assault on Precinct 13, Prince of Darkness, They Live, Big Trouble in Little China, parts of Christine and Vampires. Then there's the hack side: The rest of Christine and Vampires, In The Mouth Of Madness, Village of the Damned, Escape from LA, and Season of the Witch (didn't direct, but his name's on it). Anyway, he's strange because he hits such heights (like the blodd testing scene in The Thing) and such lows (In the Mouth of Madness). But I'll always give a John Carpenter movie a chance. Peace. Out.

    by roguewriter

Carpenter's gotten so bad in recent years I can't even remember the films he used to make that I love so much! All three of those are PRICELESS! I'm curious, VAMPIRES fans. Which part did you like best: James Woods beating the shit out of the priest for 45 minutes, Daniel "The Fat" Baldwin beating the shit out of Laura Palmer for 45 minutes, or that interesting part in the middle where JACK-SQUAT happened for 45 minutes? That was one ugly, misogynist mishmash... and it shoulda been sooooo good! ASSAULT ON PRECINCT 13, man... I guess I've got to continue to give the man props for that one. "When a man gets to be in my position, a sunset is like a woman. Every one of them is so goddamned precious... and they all end up leaving you." Why the hell didn't Darwin Jostin go on to do other good things?

    by jarek

Reading these talkbacks, I am interested in something. I have just one question... can someone please point out to me why IN THE MOUTH OF MADNESS sucked? I don't want a retarded answer like "it just did" or "it was lame", but an explanation of why it allegedly "sucked". Was it too confusing for you lamers? Or perhaps you all like your horror straight forward, stupid and thoughtless.... whatever it is, I still believe that IN THE MOUTH OF MADNESS is one of the best horror films in recent memory. Why? Because it was intelligent, had a great atmosphere, wonderful "book-within-film-within-book" plotting, it was twisted, had great performances, great imagery and was altogether very frightening.

I always look forward to a new release by Mr. Carpenter. Even if the movie doesn't work (and, let's face it-a few haven't) he still always has memorable moments in the films. The reason they don't always work is that Carpenter will TAKE CHANCES! He's willing to give different weirdness a chance to work rather than just going through GenericHollywoodScript.com and coming up with some standard, non-chance-taking tripe. When you experiment, GUESS WHAT? Sometimes it won't work. Unfortunately, you do that in Hollywood a couple of times and it's "washed-up has-been" time. Maybe that's why I like Carpenter so much. I don't think he gives one-tenth of one shit about what the whiny critics say. He's doing what he loves to do, and making a pretty damn good living at it. And as long as he keeps making 'em, I'll keep watching 'em.

I would guess that most people who hated 'In the Mouth of Madness' probably never even heard of H.P. Lovecraft. I loved the movie (His best, as far as I'm concerned) but to get the most out of it, you really needed at least a passing familiarity with Lovecraft. I think it can still be appreciated, but the total twistedness (Is that a word?) can only be appreciated after a Lovecraft primer. Now having said that,(ahem) HEY JOHN! HOW ABOUT AN ADAPTION OF "THE COLOUR OUT OF SPACE" OR "THE DUNWICH HORROR"! Please? (For God's sake, don't make me beg!)

IN THE MOUTH OF MADNESS is an outstanding film, twisty, scary and a great performance by am Neill. THE THING is genuinely nasty, bleak and frightening film. And HALLOWEEN was so good, it invented an entire film genre. Carpenter, however, is also the man who gave us shit like ESCAPE FROM LA . . . which missed the mark on almost every level IMOHO . . . which is exactly why ol' Johnny C is such a fascinating, frustrating and compelling film maker. And a legend. 'nuff said. Oh just one more thing. DIE YOU BRAINLESS MOTHERFUCKERS!! Thank you.

    by phunkdaddy

I've always been thoroughly entertained by John Carpenter. He's a great director, his movies are loads of fun, and personally, I'm looking forward to Ghosts of Mars, and have been since I first heard about it way back when. And yes, thanks whoever it was, for mentioning Dark Star...my scifi lit teacher made a vague reference to it a couple years ago, and I went searching, and found it for 3.99 in a bin at Blockbuster, bought it without delay, and watched it twice that night. Anyone who hasn't seen it, should. Carpenter and O'Bannon whipped together one of the funniest movies I've ever seen. Any fan of weirdness and scifi needs to see it. Hell, any (real) fan of film at all should see it.
    Phunkdaddy goes now.

Never under estimate a good Carpenter...

    by jackburton

I'll see any film that John Carpenter makes, and greatly look forward to doing so, and I honestly believe the man to be one of the great under appreciated talents of recent cinema (Alex Proyas and Katherine Bigelow are two others). Sure he doesn't always hit the heights with his films, and I'll be the first to admit that Memoirs Of An Invisible Man and Village Of The Damned just outright sucked, while Christine, Escape From LA and Vampires were only partially successful, but look at the number of truly great films the man has made over the years, whether they be serious in tone or mere popcorn entertainment. Assault On Precinct 13, Dark Star, Halloween, The Thing, Big Trouble In Little China, Escape From New York, Prince Of Darkness, They Live!, In The Mouth Of Madness...I mean who has contributed more to the genre of cool assed and emminently rewatchable genre films? Plus on top of that John Carpenter is one of those rare film makers these days that actually still seems to give a fuck about genre films, while not really giving a damn what his critics or what politicians and moral majoritists have to say. He has the balls to go out and fight for the right to make his films his way, and more often than not it works, for me at least. Ghost Of Mars may not be a great film, but then again it might, it just damn well might be, and that is more than enough to get my ass in the cinema to go see it.
