Somehow, a movie starring Milla Jovovich as a globe-trotting superspy, Pierce Brosnan as a high-valued assassin known as “The Watchmaker,” and a supporting cast including Dylan McDermott, Robert Forster, Angela Bassett, and James D’arcy, all for V FOR VENDETTA/NINJA ASSASSIN director James McTiegue, managed to slip completely under our collective radars.
If this trailer is any evidence, this isn’t another rushed-to-Redbox actioner with some recognizable names and European money on its back. This story of a Foreign Service Officer who is targeted by Brosnan’s meticulously crafty baddie seems to have been produced with at least the budget and attention of the former Bond’s THE NOVEMBER MAN, and with a much higher-profile cast to boot.
Honestly, the novelty of seeing Brosnan as a straight-up villain is the most attractive thing about this movie to me. After playing morally questionable, sometimes near-devious characters for the better part of his career, Pierce is cutting down on the cheeky smirks and upping the scowl factor for this one, and I’m all for it. And you could do a lot worse for an adversary against the LAWNMOWER MAN/MATADOR actor than Milla Jovovich, who's kicked ass as Alice in more RESIDENT EVIL installments than there were Brosnan-fronted Bonds.
Too bad they gotta give Forster’s fate away right there in the trailer, but hey, it’s always great to see that guy in high-profile fare.
